What are your takes on this addon? A few of the guilds I've been in worship the numbers provided by this addon, and others just use it as a benchmark to know what sort of content a person has done.
The guild I'm in currently is requiring members to have 4600+ GearScore in order to run OS3D and Maly25. I'm confused... because when those instances first came out, people ran them. And in that time, GearScore was never that high... maybe 4k, if that.
This guild is nice for it's consistent raiding schedule, but I think they're prioritizing this addon too much over a player's experience and skill.
So what's more important to you: GearScore numbers or a player's skill with their class?

wait how dose the add on calculate your score? because 4600 sounds really high for maly 25,

In the GearScore addon every item in the game that can be worn by a character is assigned a number of points based up item level and the slot it's in (i.e. a chest would have more points than a wand, and a 2h axe would have more than a 1h axe). Then the addon adds up these points and that's your "gear score".
Having gear is one thing, but knowing your class in another.
My guild is a tad on the "elitist" side, so 4600 GearScore to them is average. Yes, it is high for 25 Maly and OS3D, but for people who've been running Ulduar since 3.1... it's no big deal.
Edit: 4600 GS is equivalent to having about all Ulduar 25 gear.

It seems to roughly be about twice of the score WoW-Heroes gives.
It mostly just gives an idea of the average itemlevel.
It's useful to know whether that DPS still has level 75 greens or is making a decent effort.

Gearscore is a pretty useless number because there are so many difference scales. Wow-heroes gives me a gear score of 2912. Wowhead profile is also 2912, so apparently same scale.
http://be.imba.hu
says 644.5. Warcrafter says 2106 but apparently doesn't include gems or enchants.
And all it does is sum your item levels multiplied by slot modifiers. Someone who logs off in their Flame Leviathan item-level gearset could have a really high gear score, even if their gear doesn't make any sense (i.e. a mage with 600 hit rating and 300 MP5, just because those items had higher ilvls).

some guilds even ask applicants to run a dps test on dummys b4 acepting them.
i can see this. how many times have you been in a VOA group when the person says they know how to do this boss and yet they just end up sucking? same thing applies here you can boast about having uber dps but pop[le lie and they do this to weed out the liers.

this is normal i think and good, you cannot lie about this, when another person in group will have recount for example and see your dps, this is normal and its good, counting on good gear score suxx, many people have good gear, but low skill

i've done OS3D quite a few times and well we only took people in the 3900 range at min, duo to the intensity of the fight but as some people have started 4600 is kind of high in my option
if you have half-complident players 4200 from the addon should be sufficent, if you all are skilled easly done with 3500 for dps who can hit 3k dps on 10 man Patchy, tank prolly 3800 and healers slightly lower than tank.

It is a great addon IF it is used properly. Helps to quickly filter out people/alts that don't have the correct level gear.
Too bad, it is usually used by idiots and bads. By bads I mean the people that require you to be overgeared for instances/raids in order to join thier run, yet they themselves are undergeared. If you don't meat your own requirements, you just might be a "Bads".
yes but it doesnt mean that you have good gear that you have high dps right? or you have good gear, you have skill, no way, especialy in wow

I pay no attention to it. I can't count the number of times I've seen someone post gear "score" in raid chat before we start any bosses and I see my name in the number 8 or so spot, and then they post recount afterwards and I see myself in the 1 or 2 spot even in my "weaker" spec. I don't even think I've raided with less than 600 latency in 3 months, which kills DPS too. If 4600 is Uld25 level gear then I'm well below that as well.

Anything that uses ilevel to figure out "Gear Score" is utterly useless.
Anything that uses EP values taken from viable sources, are at the better side of being useful.

OS3D and Maly are ran for mounts.
Also, GearScore blows. First off, it is easily cheated - just mix'n'match your most shiny gear for rating. For example, I have some healing plate from ToC10-HC (no pala healers in the group we run). Could don that and proclaim myself the best geared retridin there is.
Second, some stats are more important than others. I'm running with ye ole pyrite infuser in one trinket slot, because I lack hit rating. Could equip some of the more shiny trinkets I have in the bank, but the result would be worse. And then there are items like Cape of Bloodied Waters, a ilvl200 blue that blows all similiar (and most higher!) ilvl epics straight, excuse me, out of the water. Overrated things too - for example, wowhead profiler rates my hyperspeed accelerators as 340 point gain alone.
Then we come to age old skill/gear dispute. A mouthbreathing special kid who has the best of luck in VoA is still a mouthbreathing special kid at the end of the day.
