It's pretty much iLvl. I'm fairly certain it takes no account for gems, enchants or even if it's properly itemized gear. You can mix/match from your different gear sets to maximize your gearscore. I can put parts of my elemental set, my resto set and some PvP stuff I've won in VoA into a nice 4800 gearscore set (also useful for drake fights like last boss of Occulus I might add), but my normal gearscore for either set is closer to 4400...

Item levels alone, though the newest version calculates beneficial stats for different specs to show which spec your gear would be best suited for.

LFM 10 NAXX 5k GS Minimum. 2 Reserved Items.
I've never seen anyone mention gearscore in-game on my server before, but I did see this in the form of:
"LF1M nax10 healz 245 gear or better DONT PST IF YOU DONT HAVE THE GEAR YOU !@#$S!"
Yeah, I was jumping to whisper him...

Gear Score is the worse mod to EVER come to wow...I hate it more than I hate the Achievment linking.. It is a way for the Epeen flexers to push stuff on us...
How is my new 80 sappose to hit that gear score WITH OUT going in to a raid.... I can only get so much ilevel gear from heroics and badges... My main I believe only has a 345 score and I am in Naxx 10/25/OS10 and 1 piece of T8...
Most guilds on my server want a 400 or better to even get in to Ulda...
I can say a few things about the addon but it isnt nice....
/facepalm
You do realize that most people before would just armory you or inspect you at the entrance and if you aren't up to "par" with their standards then they would find someone else, gearscore just makes it faster.
also the crap about not having good gear, chain run heroics and htoc, you will get gear good enough to get you into t7.5/t8 raids, maybe t8.5. then once you get gear from those raids you progress to t9, then you progess to t9.5. its called progression, deal with it.

Hell, Gear Score is a terrible mod by the simple fact that it doesn't take into account proper itemization or gems/enchants.
Its a stupid system and a stupid way to filter out players. Its innacurate and easily fooled. If you want a real gear score, use WoW-Heros, which at least takes gems/enchants (and I think proper itemization) into account.
But you'd still be an elitist to filter a raid using WoW Heroes, gear score, achievement linking, or any of those BS shenanigans.
You say this like your surprised most end-game raiders are elitist :P

Except, neither onyxia, sarth or naxx are end-game raids any more. Heck, even uldaman isn't an end-game raid these days, and "soon" ToC won't be either... Psst! Uldaman's a level 40 dungeon. It was never 'end game'.

yea, i think mods like gear score give people tunnel-vision about others, but heck, if they are too lazy to check for themselves on wowheroes or /inspect, then its reall just their problem to begin with.

It should be noted that GS has (had) little influence on Oculus or Ulduar (Flame Leviathan) before 3.2 when vehicles didn't even scale with ilvl. So how can GS make a Oculus fight smoother when folks have done that instance with or without achievements before?
Flame Leviathan always scaled with gear. Oculus and Malygoes were added in 3.2.

I was putting together a H-ToC group this morning before work, and a warlock /pm'ed me saying he wanted to go and had a GearScore of 3k. It was my first encounter of someone using it on my server...
I replied back "GearScore doesn't matter to me, as it counts just the highest level item on you to determine your 'awesomeness'. So long as you know where that Shadowbolt button is on your hotbar, we'll see how well you do when we get inside :)"
I've seen both sides of the GS argument. I think GS can be a good benchmark tool (once they make it so it just doesn't go off of iLvl for determining one's 'awesomeness') for quickly assessing how good a player could 'potentially' be, but it shouldn't be an all or nothing thing.
A good character needs three things:
- Gear
- Talents
- The thing lying between the keyboard and chair
Without those three, a character is nothing. You could have the awesomest gear and the cookie-cutter talent build of the month that does best, but if there's a problem between the keyboard and chair, it's all for nothing. Likewise, I've seen players with the reflexes of a cat and great situational/environmental awareness, but their gear and talents were lacking severely. In both instances, both players will perform at the same overall level...in the former case, the player goes breaking CC, attacking the wrong targets, healing incorrectly, needing everything, and just being an overall bad player. In the latter case, the player could follow instructions and did everything correctly, but their DPS or healing was so bad due to not being properly geared that it just didn't matter.
I think the random PUG system in the next patch is gonna help with this whole GS thing, and hopefully put it to bed. I don't mean to sound elitist, but when it comes to raiding 10-25mans, you really do need to have those three things in check on your own before you try going anywhere, and I can't really fault a PUG raid leader for kicking you out just using GS to score you on how well they think you'll perform. But with the random PUGs, if you don't like the group, leave. Enjoy your 15 minute rest and next time maybe think about giving the group a shot before saying 'frack this'.

New! (10/27): As part of the matchmaking system, some of the more difficult dungeons will have a minimum gear requirement. Players also need to meet the requirements for dungeons that require attunement, such as keys or quests. If a player does not meet the requirements for a particular dungeon, a lock icon will be displayed next to that dungeon. Hovering over this icon will display the requirements which have not been met.
Your hopes were trashed. WoW is implementing their own GS check. Of course, this is only on higher raids, but yeah...
But that's what I mean by GearScore going away...the game is putting in a system that makes it so that people will at least be expected to have gear of appropriate level before they can enter the dungeon. This removes the player out of the equation of who decides who can go and not go dungeon crawling. The problem is not that GS was limiting players to what they can or can't do based on gear, but rather the players were using the system to their own design. Now with Random PUG, they don't have the choice. The will make the determination for them.

... give the ignorant masses a sliver of information and this is what they morph it into.
WoW's "GearScore" Check is only for the new heroics LFG tool, and it's only to prevent characters in level 165 questing greens from joining heroic HoL and getting destroyed (or dragging their group down).
It has nothing to do with higher raids, and it's unlikely to be a very strict check.
It's not like they are throwing a gate in front of every single raid and instance with a sign that says "You must be This Purple to enter." Their check is just a small protection in the new LFG system.
