So, recently I've been trying to aquire a pair of
Spellshock Leggings
for my 49 mage. I tried to link them when saying "WTB Spellshock Leggings" and noticed I was unable to. It's known that it's unlinkable until someone in the realm logs in with them, has them drop, or otherwise sees them. So, I thought, the following may work.
Get inside ZF.
Try to link it.
If I can't, reset the instance and try again.
If I can, clear the instance, they probably dropped, or someone logged in with them.
This seems like it would work, although one of my friends stated that even though it is cached to drop on the server, it still cannot be linked until actually looted. Does anyone have any confirmation on anything like this occuring? The only way one could confirm is by linking it, then having it drop, but... that's kind of hard.
For anyone wanting to try something like this, do it Tuesday right after maintenance when not many players are on. It would work with any item that is not cached on the server, provided my theory is correct.
One other way to test it would be linking Ulduar loot, but that varies depending on whether guilds have cleared 25-man or not, but linking 25-man gear from the last boss could be the easiest way to verify (just walk into 25-man Ulduar and link all the drops. If noone has cleared 25-man on the server and you're able to link any one of the pieces it will drop in that instance of Ulduar.)

One other important fact is nonexistant items like
Dream Signet
of the Tiger, which does exist on my realm, as it's been restored by a GM and now exists, even though the variation shouldn't. However, it is still unlinkable.

I'm sure those pants have actually dropped, here's my suggestion though.
Go to the Spellshock Legging's page, and near the top right you will see a little icon that says 'Link' click that and copy the code that pops up. Paste it into your chat on WoW and you will see this little message and your item in it somewhere. Click the item once to bring up the tooltip and then shift-click it a second time to bring it into your chat. If you can press enter and they link correctly they have indeed been looted and you can now link them, if not then you will simply get disconnected from WoW and have a sad face. Hope I was helpful.. and didn't completely misunderstand your question.

You pretty much did misunderstand the question.
Noone's logged in with them since last tuesday (at least).

Past the link in game...
Then before you try linking it, just click the link itself to "See it's stats". It'll take just a moment and wham, item becomes linkable again.
No it won't. It doesn't exist on my server.

As far as I can tell, if it has never ever been looted on your respective server, you will not get a stat box or be able to link an item.
I tried doing a bunch of the Ulduar toys the first week it was out (like Ironsoul) and it didn't actually work as a link until someone had looted it.
This is why sometimes when using AtlasLoot things will just not refresh.

This is known as "loot-sniffing". An entire guild got banned for it during BC for sniffing till they got Glaivez. Blizz looks down upon it, and I think they might actually have taken measures to stop it.
I wouldn't risk it (and even then, Blizz might have hotfixed it).
Also, IIRC, loot caches are battlegroup-wide, not sure on that though.

Whenever I tried to link the "Insane in the membrane"-achievement, I god disconnected from the server.

Best post I've seen so far. Thank you very much! I've also been told it's BG-wise, thanks for your input. I assume the Glaive sniffing was in 2.1 when it first came out, correct?

Also, why the hell is this in the PvE section? Why was it moved, it's clearly Theorycrafting...

I'm not actually sure, I'm afraid. I think (think) it was more around 2.3, but that might have only been when I read about it.

I believe I read about someone sniffing for glaives on MMOwned, they posted just the theory. Is this what you were referring to? Do you have any info on it actually being done?

Nope, I read an account of it being put into practice, and the consequences.

I had it, but that was over half a year ago. I am 100% sure that a guild WAS banned for it, but I'm afraid that I can't give you a source on this.
Edit: I'd try to get you a WoW-Forum link, but they're down for now =/

Thanks, you were definitely helpful, if not for improving on the theory, but for providing helpful known information!

This is either rumor, or the poster is lying through his teeth.

True. You cannot play the instance like that.
After killing a mob, the loot is determined by RNG (Random Number Generation), where it pulls from a database of possible drops. Until you kill that mob, loot isn't generated. Thus, all you'll accomplish from running in and out of an instance and resetting is wasting your time, unfortuanately.
