Folks, I realize that we are a tight-knit and perhaps even slightly biased group, but I was hoping to get a straight answer on this issue:
I am an Ulduar 10-geared discipline priest and my friend is a Naxx 25-geared holy paladin. He insists that main spec holy paladins have a right to roll on any piece of healing cloth, even if it's against a main spec discipline or holy priest healing the same exact raid who also need the drop. In other words, he believes that his roll on cloth should have the same exact priority as any healing priest rolling on cloth.
I told him that was ridiculous, that no guild follows that practice. I also pointed out that there was an entire class of items--healing plate--that was useful to ONLY HIS SPECIFIC CLASS AND SPEC and to nobody else. I also noted that following his reasoning, a ret paladin should have every right to roll on DPS leather along with rogues and feral druids, or every piece of shaman gear, etc. In other words, he firmly believes that paladins are supposed to be able to roll on essentially any piece of gear that ever drops, based on their role in the raid, so long as it doesn't have something like spirit on it and isn't a wand. Huh?
I even pointed out that the reasoning behind disallowing the practice of letting paladins roll on every piece of cloth, leather, or mail that drops along with players for which those items are specifically itemized, is that the paladin is screwing those people out of drops. My friend just said I was "being selfish." Huh x 2. A nice piece of healing plate will eventually come along, perhaps even in the same night. But how many times have you downed a boss only to see that there is no cloth caster loot in the whole pile, let alone anything specifically itemized for priests? Is it right to let some holy paladin snake away even what little may drop for us, the only cloth-only healers in the game? I say THAT is selfish.
So I was hoping to call upon my brothers in the Wowhead community for verification on this. Am I just completely wrong when it comes to the rules regarding cloth? A holy paladin rolls on healing cloth, against a discipline priest and a holy priest in the same raid. Good or bad?

I completely agree with you. Once you get 80, there are enough healing plate pieces that no pally should be rolling on cloth pieces. I would go far enough to say a spriest has more of a right to roll on it than the pally.
Whoever was the lootmaster should have completely ignored the pally's roll. If the pally complained, then he should have been told to leave or only roll on his own gear.

Basic rule mostly is: If it's an upgrade you can roll on it.
So since he is a healer the armor is of low use for him so rolling on cloth stuff might be good for him
Now it sucks that he has basically 4 times the item pool to chose from then you. If he claims the right to roll on everything from cloth to plate then he will be geared 4 times faster then you. If you restrict him to plate only then you will both gear up at the same speed.
Try to make that clear to him. If explained in that way (and if he isn't a complete $%^&*!) he will most probably pass on cloth and only take them if they are no upgrade to you.
Make him aware that this way he will still gear up faster then you (because he gets all the plate drops and a few of the cloth/leather/mail drops while you get only the cloth ones).
If he doesn't agree that you should have priority then he is the kind of person you most probably don't want to do instances with anyway.

Also, a lot of Cloth Gear has spirit on it, so is less than optimal.
If it is BiS, by any means he can roll on it, if it's not BiS but is cloth, leather, mail and someone else with more limited gear selections can upgrade from it, they should get priority.

That he rolls on it? Don't think it's that bad at all. He "can" wear plate, doesn't mean that he has to. After all, it's only the healing stats on a piece that matters for healers. But does his roll count just as heavy as a clothies roll? I'd think not. That's just common sense. Although a lot of that seems to be missing these days.

Can't argue with you, ToHF is BiS for spriests as well (pre-U). Its stat allocation isn't perfect, however, whereas it IS perfect for the specs listed on the site. It's not my site, so I don't plan to defend it, but until I find a better resource, it's a solid (though not infallible) reference for loot allocation.

The only time I'm ok with someone rolling on a lower armor tier is for either an elemental shaman rolling on cloth with hit on it, or a boomkin rolling on cloth with hit, as neither class gets gear of their armor tier with hit. Paladins, however, have no right to roll on healing gear for other armor tiers, as you said, they get their own armor for their specific spec and class, which just annoys me.

Also, it was saying a ring with Spirit on it is good for Holy pallies and Resto/Ele shamans. (as PRIMARY class, not Secondary)
Not going to that site ever again, that's for sure.

I agree that any pally rolling on cloth gear over a priest is epic fail on the pallies part and even more epic fail on the raid leader for giving it to them. I seriously doubt that a piece of cloth is BiS for a pally. The pally could roll but it would be offspec as there is better itemized plate for them.

Sounds like someone has a case of the Lootchies! AKA Loot $%^&*s.
If your player is in a guild raid and is thinking of himself above his raid, then he's not likely going to find success in his raiding career. If he were in my guild, I'd probably put him into Quarantine and re-evaluate him.
