The only thing that is really profitable about engineering is the utter fun that you yourself will end up having with it. Need a mailbox? Whip out a Moll-e. Need to get to an area quickly? Whip out your trans-dimensional teleporter. Want to blow something up? Well then my friend, you better have gone Goblin (Goblins LOVE explosions) engineering. Want to Shrink the World? Head over to the Gnomes and have a chat with them. Want to make money? Well, you might be able to make a wee bit on some of the higher level mounts, but you have to grind all the mats in order to make it (and not a one of them is cheap).
Good luck my friend, and enjoy your exploding sheep!

BTW: I don't do either. I just level Engineering straight, without either of them.
Cheers.
