Wailing Caverns in the old days could take 2 hours to do. The dungeons back then were poorly designed. They are useless but can provide some element of fun.

Glad i started when it wasn't "Here .. Have 60 levels Free!" and crap like that..
I have done most if not All old instances, at level, with friends at level, and they were Great.
Also helps a Lot in learning the basics in doing them at 80. The amount of people running instances now that have NO clue how to work as a group is downright Disturbing. The Suck factor is rizing fast.
So, No - they aren't useless. they still have a Great reason to be in the game - were anyone to play the game without trying to get to 80 in a weekend, then QQ why no one wants to group with them in instances and laughs at their spec, gear, and knowledge of the game mechanics....

I just keep a few in my Quest Log in case someone in my guild wants to run one (until I level to a point where I don't get full XP). But I don't usually actively look for groups. Its not really worth the time.
You don't need to spend hours grinding in dungeons to learn how to play in a group. Its not that hard. Common sense will get you just as far as experience.

Get some friends and do those dungeons for the
FUN
of it.
Absolutely. It's true that the old world 5-mans are sometime ridiculously huge and at times a pain to even enter, but if nothing else they have a much more
epic
feel to them than the current 15-30 min versions.
Zul'Farrak, for me, is the ideal design. Longer than Northrend's dungeons (and miles longer than Outland's) but not the marathon that Blackrock Depths, Maraudon or Uldaman can turn into at their respective levels.

Mainly because you can mount, too. ^_^

I already made a similar thread about your problem although mine has more to it like the lack of people to make friends with. The low level instances may not be used as much as what you get between 70-80 but that doesn't mean they are completely not used anymore.
Sure it takes longer just to set up a group however you can reduce the problem by being healer or tank yourself, I can remember playing a Hunter once and I did the Stockades with another Hunter who was about level 27-30 and we also had someone who was a level 20 Rogue that was a twink before, we might of not really had a tank or much of a healer but me and the other Hunter managed to tank the entire instance.
I'm probably considering giving WoW another try and hope I get into a guild I can chat to.
