Now is this to say that I take issue with the way I have been personally moderated? Not really. I've taken issue with the way people have personally moderated me since skyfire.
Skyfire. I am amazed either at your memory, or your capability to hold on to grudges.
A grudge? About what? Everyone always thinks skyfire and I had a really big falling out, or didn't get along, or something. Skyfire and I had a pretty good relationship, and I'm always the first person to say hi to him when he drops in.
If you didn't understand our relationship, then I guess it could look bad. I respected him as a person, but was critical of everything he did as a moderator. He was critical of everything I did as a poster, but we knew our limits. I didn't insult him (if you don't consider calling someone a "commie" an insult), and he pretty much just ignored my my protests to his actions. The nice thing about him was that he allowed questioning of himself and his moderation.
Also there was a rumor I had something to do with him not being a mod anymore. Not at all. He cursed about some girl that dumped him or something, and malgayne demoded him. I wasn't even online at the time. It's a shame really. He was able to strike a balance, to keep things from going sour, but allow for a degree of freedom. Which brings us to this:You either heavily moderate it, which will likely result in lack of participation, constant work for the mods, and sore feelings towards them, or you let it run wild, which will devolve into chaos at some point.
I can't express how much I disagree. When OT was called Randomness, we were in a time when things could get heated up in debate, but kept in check. I remember epic debates with Laihendi, and TheMediator, and dragon, and others that would last for pages and pages and pages. It was most engaging. But, everyone knew where the boundaries were... everyone. There was no question as to what the boundaries were. Once the boundaries start moving, or change depending on who you are, or who the moderator is, then things get chaotic. I'm currently on a forum right now where there is almost no moderation. The moderators there only moderate when they have to. I don't even think they look at a forum unless they get flooded by a ton of reports. However, things don't really get too crazy. Reason? Because everyone there knows the limits. They know the kinds of blatent things that are going to get them banned. You can't post a picture of porn. You can't JUST insult someone. You can have a demeaning post, or be harsh on someone, or tell them off with evidence, but the boundaries are CLEAR. So, the result, a rich rich debate setting that is nearly a free for all, but remains largely SFW. The mods don't participate in debate, just keep the forums functioning and leave the rest to the users. Everyone is happy with the moderation because it is consistent.
On the other end of the spectrum, I'm sure you could find a forum by disney that doesn't let you say the word "anus". I'm sure everyone is happy there, too, because everyone knows what the limits are.
The trick to effective moderation is clear, consistent, outlined, unbiased moderation. Wowhead doesn't have that. Different people are treated differently based on their history of moderation, who the moderator is, and an argument can be made for the biases of the moderators themselves. You cannot have a happy medium that way. You either have a police state or anarchy.
And, honestly, if the person can't handle someone else's opinion being fervently
typed
at them, the problem doesn't lie with the forum or it's users. It clearly lies between that person's computer and their chair.
I don't necessarily buy this. It's true to a degree, but you can't just put it all on the person's skin. Some words can be very hurtful. I've never been truly hurt by words on the internet, and some have genuinely tried to hurt me, but I've seen it done to others, and it's not acceptable.
Some part of being human that never grew in right. It's really hard to tell with some people, though. Like me, in real life I'm... well... my beloved Aunt says that I'm brutally honest. I think she described it as "taking the bull by the horns". She said it isn't always the best approach. My wife gets this look on her face when I'm doing it too harshly. I've learned to look for it on her face if I'm not sure if I'm crossing a line. She's a very good "check and balance" for me. So, on the internet I can run amok, especially if I don't know where the boundaries are. It isn't my intention to hurt people, as the person who writes hate letters to parents with dead children does. But some people are very fragile, especially in hot topics. I've learned a lot, especially from wowhead. I've learned to try giving people the benefit of the doubt. If someone is being rough, perhaps that is just their blunt personality. I let it go. Only when it becomes apparent that the person in question is hateful that I push back.
But to the point: Moderators need to ask themselves the questions, "Does this post need moderation", and then "what will happen if I don't moderate it", and then "are the consequences to no moderation acceptable". It seems like the only question that moderators here now ask is "Could this post be moderated". If the answer to that is yes, then it gets moderated.

Maybe this is worthy of separate thread.
I don't think threads questioning moderation are allowed here. Even if they are, I wouldn't expect any changes to come out of it. It all seems like a waste of effort, like trying to empty a lake with a siv. This is too big of a problem, and no one here has the power to make changes. The only thing that will move this lake is... time. So I wait.

Nah it can stay here.
As for the moderation question: I like that Wowhead moderates things here and tries to keep out right flame wars from broiling the forums. I've been hit by the moderation stick quite a few times, and really, I deserved them. The simple fact is, if you want to act like an @#$%^&* a troll or a $%^&*!, then man up and accept the fact that you are going to get called on it.
If you feel the need to attack someone else religion, just because they have a different view point from you, you should get the same result in the 'virtual' world that you would in the real world. If you want to hide behind the screen and pretend that making a comment such as 'transforming into a horse' after someone else writes a long heart felt post about the issues they are going through, then accept that someone will want to 'punch you in the nose' for it(a moderated result in other words).
I do like the debates here on Wowhead, no matter how many I lose; at least I know that if someone is trying to be king Asshat the mods will slap him down for it.

Agreed. I could see the usefulness of such a thread, but only if it resulted in a change of climate on the boards, which it likely wouldn't. Besides, it'd probably just be most of the frequent debaters parroting what MyTie has already said here.

That reminds me. Has wowhead ever given an official reason for the lack of a PM function? I've never really gotten why there wasn't one. Just seems kinda basic for a site with forums.
I think that the last reason I'd read was because it could be a potential moderation nightmare. Lol, talk about irony.

It's not even that hard to moderate, imo. >_>. If someone sends you offensive crap, report it...I mean...yaknow?

So my company is doing this thing where we're taking suggestions for new fudge flavors on facebook, and whichever is chosen is going to be added to our lineup, and the person who suggested it will get like 6 pounds of the new flavor free, and we'll name it after them. If any of you guys want to do it e-mail me and I'll give you the link- I don't want to just randomly throw it out in the world tied to my gamer tag- lol. Oh- and you can only win if you're in the continental US- sorry :(
PS: Asakawa gave me the green light to post this.

Elhonna-
On Thanksgiving, I was visiting my family in Monroe Washington. While sitting around, I picked up a stray newspaper and read the front page of the business section. There was a dude there that had failed at numerous businesses, except one. Rocket chocolate. He was grossing over $100,000
a month
. He puts caffeine rich chocolates in gas stations, targeting adults. There is a huge market for this stuff, caffeinated consumables, which are impulse items, which is what chocolate is. You should look into making the flavor "caffeine", individually wrapping the bars, and marketing to adults.
Here
is a link to that dude's business. Good luck.
