dude, Latin american dubs are for kids too. I watched all those shows when I was growing up as a small child. At the very least latin american dubbers (for anime and ANIME ALONE, sadly videogames aren't held to the same standards of quality) Knew better than to tamper with the quality of a fantastic show.
I mean really, if the japanese song is awesome, why not simply translate/adapt it to english? Why replace it altogether with techno/rap/heavy-metal crap? it kills the soul of the show when the names of the characters and places are changed, the soundtrack replaced, the context edited, and the songs removed in favor of "hipster" garbage.
Its the main reason why I don't watch anime in english. I either see them in latin dubs (Which are AWESOME as they do know how to keep the stuff intact, and no names, or songs, or soundtracks, or anything at all is changed) or I see them in japanese with spanish subtitles.
Its almost sickenign to see the degree censors are willing to go to mangle Anime Classics like that. Seriously, if I had to list every glaring facepalm-inducing change they did on Shaman King we'd be here all day.

Cromartie High School. Best dub of all time and not because it's so bad it's good. I love that series.

=/ pretty much the only anime shows I've seen that had a great dub in english are Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Shamploo. (And it was mostly because for both, they chose STEVE FRIKKING BLUM for the voice of the lead protagonist. How awesome is that?)
On those 2, they left their (awesome) soundtrack intact, and didn't do any heavy
butchering
censorship like they did with so many other shows.

I tend to just read the manga rather than watch the anime in almost every case, so, it's rarely an issue for me.

I like the English openings for Digimon and Shaman King; they were catchy little tunes, designed to make sure parents don't realize you were watching a show where people routinely died and had horrible injuries done to them.
As for the dub itself.....meh; I watch them both, but if I can, I'll have subtitles on, just to see the original dialogue.
I do prefer the manga over the animes, but that's just because you miss out on the good stuff heh, such as the very graphic death of Haku in the manga(two page spread) compared to the cut away in the anime with a weird stain rather then the hole in his chest.

that's not a luxury I can afford U_U manga aren't sold in venezuela.
heck, the only reason I even was able to see anime was due to having cable, and thus we had the mexican version of Fox Kids.
Just about every children in latin america from the 80s to the early 2000 grew up with shows such as Medabots, Pokemon, Digimon, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura, Samurai X (Also known as Rurouni Kenshin) Beyblade, Yu-Gi-Oh (Where the game was A SENSATION OVER HERE, despite of (or because of) "moral guardians" saying that those cards were satanic) Monster Rancher, Caballeros del Zodiaco (Saint Seiya on english) Speed Racer (known as Meteoro in spanish), Shaman King, and the list just goes on and on.
The manga of these anime more often than not, never made it here =/
Heck, most of the comics I had as a kid were because my uncle used to travel monthly to Panama and he'd buy me a giant stack of comics for me and my cousins each month.

/shudders.
you can't be serious :S catchy or not, that techno-crap that passes for the Digimon opening is nothing compared to the original japanese song (or the equally awesome latin american version). Ditto for shaman king (Specially for shaman king)
Man, Censorships are so uptight up there in the US.
I just don't see why if it aint broken, why must it be fixed? why not leave the songs as they are when you are dubbing a show into another language? why that need to change what needs no change?

Rank, there are people who think that the English openings are better then the Japanese ones; myself, the only Japanese opening I like is Butterfly; to me the rest are kinda meh for Digimon and I love the song for Digimon Frontier for the English opening.
Edit: Also, they are starting to do that, as a lot of the animes have the original Japanese song for them now when they get dubbed over. It was mainly just things done by 4Kids that had new American versions made for them....but like I said above, people like them, even if they are corny: The first One Piece opening is seen as a so bad it's good over in Japan and even made a crowning music of awesome.
As for Manga.....go look at the Anime thread, as I linked a bunch of free manga reading sites heh.

=/ I guess mileages may vary. After all, there are some people who actually think Justin Bieber's music is awesome. So I guess you got a point. (Still don't understand why anime dubbers feel the need to change the songs, as oposed to simply adapt them to english. Again, why fix what aint broken?)

=O goodie, I gotta check that out.

They mainly don't adapt them cause some of the sounds completely horrible in English so it's easier to just make new ones.

how about changing names? or doing such heavy extreme editing/censoring? ugh :S
I'm sure you are familiar with the absurd degree of changes they did to shows like Sailor Moon, Saint Seiya, and specially Dragon Ball.

/shrug It's because people thought that they were suppose to be for kids, so they edited out things...but they also fixed things on later releases: The Buu Saga when it was finally released had everything but the curse words added back in; the deaths were on screen, there was copious amounts of blood and all.
Honestly, Dragon Ball itself didn't get hit as hard as Z did; about the only things that got censored were the brief nudity moments and some of the more violent deaths. Moon still got away with a lot for when it was released heh...and each new 'season' more and more stuff was left in unchanged.
The first season of Digimon, only a few things were censored: Myotismon feeding on human women, the deaths of Pumpkinmon and Gotsumon, the bath scene with Mimi when Tai got his crest and a few of the names were changed; other then that, they left things alone. Season 2 was the same with a few names changed and a couple of the raunchier jokes edited out. Season 3....yeah the censors were asleep for that one.....Season 4 had only one major edit and that was Zoe/Izumi in her 'sexy dynamite' swimsuit lol.
Really, now a days, most of the original content is there; if it's not an adult show they tone down the language and may take out some of the blood but that's about it.

Damn, I really miss a lot of those shows. I wish there was a youtube-like site to see all those classic childhoood anime's I had either in spanish dub, or in japanese with subtitles.
Tried finding Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin) on youtube and was only able to find like 20 episodes (out of nearly 100)
Seriously, if these shows are so old what's so wrong in letting people see them on youtube? My little pony has absolutely no problem with letting their show air on youtube a few weeks after each episode is out. Even not-so-old shows like X-men Evolution have the entire seasons up on youtube because those shows are OLD, and chances of them being re-run aren't that high.
Edit:
/shrug It's because people thought that they were suppose to be for kids, so they edited out things..
Funny, latin american dubbers also thought these shows were for kids (and they were) yet they left them intact.

Aye; but there are a few times where the Animes are better then the Mangas, but that's really really rare heh.

I've heard this a lot, and that's why I wanna read it.
Though to be honest, the anime is divided in 2 halves:
the Pre-shishio Arc (everything from the first episode, up to the demise of Makoto Shishio) and the Post-shishio arc (after the demise of Shishio till the show was cancelled)
and IMO; the quality of the show took a DRASTIC decline post-shishio. Crappy villains, filler episodes galore, overall not good at all.
The manga however I've heard wasn't anywhere near as bad on that regard.
