I see. How does Melbourne compare to (was it Sydney? Can't remember for the life of me)? I take it it's better given that you're living there, but you never know
^^
I'm allright - sent in an application to a swimming-centered university in the U.S, so my life is pretty much revolving around the wait for an official answer. Nervous, but good - I suppose
:p

Good luck!
Yeah, I was living on the fringes of Sydney's metropolitan sprawl before, 120km from the city.
Where I am now in Melbourne is 10km from the city... So yeah.
Like I said, circumstance brought me here. I quit my full-time job to take up a job offer in the regional city of Geelong with a former employer; he promised up to $2000/week (which is about 1.5x the average wage); but with our working methods, there was no way we were ever going to clear $700/week. Considering that we were doing 10-hour days and living like sardines - 5 people in a 2-bedroom holiday cabin - I was already considering ditching the job and going elsewhere.
Then the company we worked for proved to be dishonourable, so my considerations evolved into necessities. After considering Perth, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, I eventually decided to give Melbourne a try; since it was a 1-hour train ride from Geelong, it would cause the least upheaval. I've been here 8 days now.
I'm staying in a strange cross between a share-house and a hostel; living conditions are
a little
better than they were in Geelong (I have a room to myself), but most importantly, there is heaps of work here. The suburb I'm in is pretty bad; there's a police stakeout every second night, 1-in-20 houses gets burgled, and drug use is prominent and completely unconcealed.
Today, I interviewed with Crown Entertainment Complex (Australia's largest casino; and Melbourne's premier tourist destination) as a table games dealer. The indication is that I'll have a job there, I just have to wait 3 weeks or so for a police check to be completed. In the meantime, I'm starting another job tomorrow, doorknocking for charity. So on the employment front, at least, I'm doing okay. If this position with Crown goes ahead, I'll be in Melbourne for at least 2 years. And will move right into the city. If it doesn't, I'll save up enough money and either move to the Gold Coast (which I'd been planning to do all year before the Geelong offer came along); or myself and my best mate will become freelance farmhands, slowly circumnavigating the country whilst helping farmers with their harvesting.

Are you still abstaining from alcohol or was that just a momentary thing?

I totally abstained for a month, drank with friends on my final night at home, and have drank twice in the 3 weeks I've been in Victoria. So I'm definitely not the pisshead I was, but the more I thought about never having a drop of alcohol again for the rest of my life, the more I realised that it was an over-the-top decision. The month off was the time I needed to regain my self-control. (I went a bit nuts from about June to August).

Did you manage to beat the last boss?
And, also, stupid question, but I've never used the cure drink pin and now I'm tempted to. Does it have a limited number of uses per battle, or does it cycle endlessly?
'cause if it cycles endlessly, I might have a smidgen of hope. I'm going to pull out all my AoE pins (thinking Live!, Earthshake, Pyrokinesis and the Cure Drink. I might switch out Pyrokinesis for my maxed out Happy Beam, though).
E: Interest, honestly it's a good game, but the last boss thing is a big flaw.
It's been a hell of a long time, but I think it might run out of charges. It's been years since I played that game, though.

I just realized that I missed the end of the world last Friday. Completely forgot about it. I can't find much reaction on the web about it, though. It was a lot more low key than the last time, but I kind of want to see if he lays out another line of BS, or throws in the towel. For some reason, cult mentality fascinates me.

Same.
But, for the old man's sake, I hope the world ends the next time - I don't think his heart could survive another spiritual end.
