Finally finished my lit paper. It was a biography of Tolkien, and the ways his works influenced the fantasy genre. Needless to say, I got references to Song of Ice and Fire, WoW, and Warhammer in there...I even devoted a paragraph to explaining how Song of Ice and Fire was a deconstruction of the tropes and fantasy cliches that LotR created or codified. If I get points off, I'll just deal with it, I love ranting about the things I love =P
Nice! I did Tolkien for National History Fair. Needless to say, he rules.
Oh hell yeah. The LotR books are probably my favorite books...
maybe
after Song of Ice and Fire. Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse-Five are both up there too.
Song of Ice and Fire is simply the best Fantasy series ever written, tbqh.

Just the fact that it's able to go in the opposite direction of all those old fantasy cliches and completely deconstruct them is impressive. I have to admit it's
heavily
inspired a fantasy book I'm working on, I'm trying to actually make it less Song of Ice and Fire-esque before I actually write it.

Heh, mine is WoW inspired. It's filled with Airships and steampunk tech =P
Although I've tried to steer it away from that, and make it more like Leviathan by Scott Westerfield.

Abhorsen Series is something I highly advice reading. I fell in love with Garth Nix.

My main way of differentiating it from SOIAF is by making it steampunky; I decided to set it in the midst of an industrial revolution that helps spark the big war (along with demons, naturally). =P

Nice, sounds interesting.
When you finish a part, email me (on my userpage.) I'd like to see your writing outside of the mushroom kingdom.

Blizzard won't take my phone call because they are too busy, and my emails get a 'delayed reply', and I can't sign in to talk to the forums.
So... how do I contact these guys to get my account back?
