DPS vs Damage Done

Yes, I am aware there are threads with this same subject, however they only seem to be in class-specific forums. I am looking for a general opinion on this from all classes.
In terms of raiding, what do you find more valuable? Dps, or damage done overall?
When somebody asks me (elemental shaman) how much DPS I do, I bring this up to them and they get confused asking me how could my DPS be lower if my damage output is top-chart.

As Valanily said, Damage done actually tells you how much of an impact you had. DPS is only counting the time that you are actually ON the boss and doing damage. So say in Maexna, you're at 5k dps and someone else is at 4.9k dps. If YOU get webbed and the 4.9k doesn't, they will have more damage done because they were on the boss for a longer amount of time than you were, even though you were dealing more dps while on the boss.

Why are you arguing about what's best when these numbers basically is the same thing?
DPS is basically the average "Damage Done" for the whole fight.
Whenever I post dps-lists, I show "Damage Done" with "DPS" in a bracket at the end. They're both equally useful!

Some people are idiots. Your point? Post both and avoid any problems.

You are absolutely wrong, as was said earlier, you can die 20 seconds into a 10 minute fight and because recount only computes dps during the time you are alive and fighting you could end up with 5k dps in that 20 seconds. Then you have player 2 that completes the entire 10 minute fight and is at 4k dps. Who would you rather have, player 1 (20 seconds at 5k dps = 100000 total damage done) or player 2 (600 seconds at 4k dps = 2,400,000 total damage done). DPS means nothing, total damage done is the true meter.
As I said, I use
both
lists. DPS-meters are a fine way of deciding how your ability to push out damage is, and Damage DOne is a fine way of showing your total contribution.
My DPS-lists end up something like this:
1. 18937 damage (385 dps)
2. 17322 damage (370 dps)
3. 14023 damage (330 dps)
etc.
If somebody dies early on, well, shame, they'll fall down the damage done list, but you can still see that they have a potential high damage done.
Short summary. DPS is for seeing how well you can perform. Damage Done is how well you've performed.

But why are you always treating the high DPS as if he's dying?

DPS proves nothing but give you a benchmark. You should aim for a certain number throughout any fight while the end damage done is the results of your labour.
No one should in my opinion post these stats anywhere. If you want to know your dps you should get a meter and keep it to yourself. Don't flaunt, but do realize that others reads it too.
I keep it running and only look at it at the end of a fight. I read overall damage and highest DPS achived. If I find these details to be lacking or poor I check up on the progress of the fight and see where it's going wrong.

The main problem when comparing both is that players staying alive and fighting the whole encounter can have inversed orders on damage done and dps. This is because the addons calculating dps usually stop counting time once you stop dpsing the boss for 4-5s or more.
A class with dots stays active while moving (the dots do damage) whereas a class without dots will get counted as inactive for a short period of time until it can go back to the boss.
Thus dot classes will generally be lower on dps even if they might have better damage done.
And so the answer to your question is : don't use one or the other, use both and be able to analyze stuff (which most people don't manage, sadly). That being said, if someone tries to group people for an heroic or raid, damage done won't help them as it's only circumstancial (length of fight, performance of others, ...) so there you can use your average dps value.

Those people stayed alive and did sustained damage.
Those people are most likely the ones with the most DPS too...

Because if you are comparing 2 people that didn't die in a boss fight, I completely agree that DPS is an important stat, it's when someone dies mid fight and has a high DPS number but lower total damage that I think DPS fails to be an important measure.
Well, we could look at Noth. Somebody is totally dominating damage done. Then we see they've done nothing than DPS the adds all through both phase 1 and 2. They'll dominate the DAmage Done-part for the bossfight. See? You can abuse it both ways.
Bottom line. It's not the answer. It's a guideline. And DPS/Damage-Done go hand in hand.

But why are you always treating the high DPS as if he's dying?Because that's what happens in most pugs. And such discussions always arise from pugs since guilds should have at least one person smart enough to interpret data.
