i did a test on my mage
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Draenor&n=Whoyebe
on one tank of mana, no mana pots or mana gems, to see what my specs do for damage done and dps,
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#of0icu0fzxGuMxedcZMhf0o:izwo
20/51 fire, i did 168,646 damage at 1,868.2 dps, and for my other
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#of0Vcu0cZ0Ec0RhIhVubhct:izwo
57/3/11 arcane i did 68,562 damage at 2,226.8 dps.. fire spec did 100,084 more damage at 358.6 less dps.. so the question is do u want to do more dps and do less damage or do u want to do damage and less dps
and as u can see im not all epiced out im still kinda sissy'ed

Well u dont have the arcane blast glyph, and did u check the time it took u to make the amount of dmg with both specs?

Damage done is how much you have contributed to the boss-kill. It should be the only factor in judging performance.

Don't ever consider Recount as appropriate source of your party's DPS.
Let me explain how it count DPS.
This is the
combat log
of our first Sartharion10+3 kill. I'm sorry for russian nicknames and outdated log.
Let's see the damage done by our Resto Druid. He was hit three times by elementals and one time by little dragonspawn
at the end
(that's important) of the fight. He did 2276 damage by Retribution aura and Thorns.
His DPS was: 2276 damage / 85 seconds = 26,7.
His
active
DPS was higher(206, actually), because he damaged things at the end of the fight.
Recount shows
active
DPS, not the DPS itself.
P.S.: Oh, and sorry for my bad English.

This is exactly why dps is unimportant as a factor in judging performance. He still did only 2276 damage, regardless of dps displayed.

But if you want to compare 2 different raids, or your performance in those raids, you should look the DPS, not the damage.
One night we killed Training Dummy in 1 minute. I dealed, let's say, 500k damage.
Other night we killed same Training Dummy in 5 minutes. I dealed the same 500k damage.
Did I performed the same?..

Not necessarily true. There are quite a few boss fights where there are adds that must be taken care of, which can skew dps or damage done all over the place. This is especially true in Ulduar. It's still relevant and the two aren't mutually exclusive, but just keep in mind that whoever did the most damage to the boss may not have the highest overall damage or highest dps.
yes, but recount won't show seperate encounters for a boss fight and adds unless for some reason the boss resets and your entire party actually leaves combat.
it'll show damage done for the entire time you were in combat, adds, boss, whatever. if you click an individual, it will show the breakdown of whom was damaged by what, but the main screen shows just the fight.
