There would have to be several exceptions to the rule though. Jobs, emergency situations, and emancipated minors are just a few that I can think of.
Right now where I live, teens are not allowed out after midnight unless for work or in the event of an emergency. And you can't just say there's an emergency; our cops actually follow up on the information. I know some places have cops who won't but ours do. And with laws forbidding teens working past 11am on school nights, the work excuse rarely if ever works.

Missouri has a similar law, but it only pertains to driving after hours. They can be out as late as they want, as long as they are not driving a car.

Should teens have to abide by a curfew = Should there be a curfew for teens.
That was what I meant to be asking, sorry if it were unclear.
Ah OK, no worries.
But my second reation is, we should not have to rely on laws to parent our kids for us.
It's not about parenting our kids, it's about keeping the rest of us safer.

1 in 6 drivers on the road after 1am are on drugs
Hell, maybe adults need a curfew too.

I find little to no reason for a teenager to be out late at night. I think parents should enforce a curfew and if that isn't obeyed or applicable at least the city/county/state can have a legal curfew to help minimize "mischief" past a certain time.
I also think there should be something somewhere that says infants shouldn't be out past a certain time, even with a parent. I have mixed feelings on this but I think babies at movie theaters or grocery stores etc after midnight is ridiculous (and no, this opinion has nothing to do with the injured children at the Colorado shooting).

You're free to your opinion but nobody is going to tell me when I can and can not have my infant in public. Ever. Period. As long as the infant is healthy, loved and is still getting their sleep; I fail to see the harm. In fact, many parents take infants for drives or grocery shopping in the middle of the night when the infant is restless and keeping the parent up anyways. Atleast they are doing something harmless and hopefully making that cute little soul a little more apt to sleep.
E: I do agree it's ridiculous to take an infant to the movies in the middle of the night. But not so much that a law should be placed. That goes a little too far imo.

A personal request: this place has users from many different countries, so could we have debating topics that are more universal and less USA specific please?
I didn't think this was USA specific? EnigmaPunch and I both recounted descriptions of curfews imposed and results from our part of the world. I'm sure others have their own stories as well.

Well, I'd have a few problems with such a law. For one, at 18 and 19 I went out for "bad reasons" (to clubs and pubs) after midnight frequently, both at home and at university accommodation. I woke up my parents once and didn't drink for a month or two after that. How would police determine whether an individual had permission or not to be out? A friend of mine is 21 and recently graduated with a first in computer science from UCL (and is about to start an IT business with former classmates), but can get away with purchasing a child ticket on the train. Would he be escorted home if he couldn't produce holographic ID?

I hadn't considered the being unable to sleep thing. I think I'm more referring to times when I'm out with friends late between 1-2 am and we go to Dennys or something and I see this group of younger people with a little baby or toddler and it's barely clothed and being given soda and whatever else. Some situations just seem absurd to me like that.

When I was a waitress, back when I was finishing college, there was a woman who came to our restaurant/bar with her 9-10 year old child, at 10:00 at night, for 2-fers. We wouldn't let her bring him in the bar, so she sat him alone at his own table and ordered him a kids meal, then left him there so she could drink at the bar for the next 2 hours. He could see her through the glass, so he sat by himself and watched his mother get drunk, while she totally paid no attention to him. We brought him crayons and paper, and checked on him to refill his soda, but we could have walked out the door with him and she wouldn't even have noticed. I don't always think the parents should be able to have the kids out whenever and wherever they want just because they're the parents.

i think, i just think, putting a curfew for teens reinforced by the government would really dampen our own constitution. such a thing would never pass

Most places have a curfew requirement. If you're caught you're usually just taken home with a warning... depends on what you're caught doing after curfew really. It hasn't been harmful and only applies, at least in the U.S., to those under 18 years of age.

It's not a national law- generally it's by county or town.

No, they shouldn't. It should be up to the parents to decide how mature their kids are, and how late they should be out.

This was not limited to the US. ^.^
If the US was brought up is was with people using examples of where they are.
E: To be sure I was being fair, I went through all past topics and have placed them in the first post as past topics. Only four were directly tied to the US. Sometimes topics will be directly tied to the US but I don't feel I have made a habit of it.
