My main is a restodruid who was a LW/skinner. I wanted to drop skinning and take up JC. So I started my DK, who sole initial purpose was to take up skinning and mining to support my druids professions.
I got my JC maxed and stopped leveling the DK at around 71. I thought I was done. They released epic gems and I needed to prospect titanium. So I started leveling him again and it went so fast I hit 80 in no time and I rather enjoyed soloing with him. I decided to give him a shot at tanking heroics and I loved it. It required skill and rune management.
As of today, both my toons have a gearscore of 2500 for their mainspec, tank and heals. On my DK, I have Co-tanked all of ToC10 including MTing Anub. DK's are just as good as any other tank class as long as the player has skill. They DPS as well as any other class as well. They are worth the time if you enjoy the play style. They are played differently than all the other classes. I would have to say that having to properly manage your runes to be effective at your role is actually fun. This is one class where face rolling isn't much of an option.

Death Knights have been around since Warcraft 2. While in some ways yes Blizzard used them as a marketing ploy to help increase sales on WotLK but they also brought them into the game because they share lore and go with the story of Arthas/The Lich King.
I agree with the simple fact that everyone and there grandmother now has a DK. They're are everywhere. Here is the simple fact that everyone needs to know though; While Death Knights may be a dime a dozen, there are very few out there that actually know what they are doing and know how to work the class properly.
I have seen so many fail DK's its not even funny. Players think just because they're playing Blizzard's first "Hero Class" that they don't have to do anything to be l33t. That's a total misconception.
DK's take as much skill to master as any other class. They have their strengths and weaknesses just like any other class. Some people try them and don't like the play style. Personally, I love my DK, I enjoy the play style and the class itself.
As for not seeing very many in high end raids? That just depends on the guild really. Guilds I have seen normally have maybe 2 DK's in their core raiders, while other classes making up the rest.
Reasoning? Each guild has its own reasoning. I know some raiding guilds that try to use the least amount of melee as they can and concentrate on ranged dps. Others try to balance it out. Whatever works for his/her own guild.
The best thing for any player to do is to try the Death Knight class. If you don't like it, don't play it. Its there to be another option open to the player for them to enjoy the game. If you do like it and do enjoy the play style, please, do you fellow DK brothers and sisters a huge favor; do some research. Find out how to play them and play them well. Don't give us a bad name (we already have Arthas to thank for that! lol).

At the minimum, they're nice to have as a profession twink. Once you're done with the DK starting area, you'll only have 7 levels to go to learn the top levels of professions.

DKs are as good or bad as any other class.
They are in no way superior to other tanks or melee dps. And they are also in no way inferior to them.
Basically in terms of capabilities making a DK is exactly the same as making a Warrior. You will be an awesome melee dps and you will be an awesome tank. You will be able to tank all bosses in the game and you will be able to do so no better or worse then any other tank.
As dps you will pull good melee dps which can compete with other classes in high end raiding. You will also be able to offer nice buffs to your group: 10% AP in blood spec (same as enhance Shamans), 20% melee haste in frost spec (again: same as enhance Shamans) or 30% increased disease damage in unholy spec (which only DKs can provide, it's an awesome buff to other DKs in the raid and to shadow Priests). Additionally you have the horn in all specs - but it is weaker then the Shamans talented totem.
Long story short: Tank just as any other class, dps with great buffs that mostly overlap with Shamans. If you lack an enhance Shaman in your 10man group having a DK or two will be a great benefit. If you have an enhance Shaman then you will still bring awesome dps and be a valid contribution to your team.
It's all about liking the class or not. I personally prefer ranged dps to melee dps but if you like melee and the rune mechanic - go make a DK!

On my server atleast there are not that many Deathtards left tbh, the deathtard statement was true like 4-5 months ago. The dks that joined as dps in half tanking gear and ninjaed the stamina trinkets from tanks, the ones that dpsed in frost presence and didnt give a crap about kill order or said "gogogogogogogooo!" and "dps metorz plox" after aoeing trash in pug raids, are all but gone now. The tards seems to have rerolled retloladins, or went back to their hunters.
The few deathtards that still exist is usually alts of other tards levelling through Outlands.
So go ahead with your dk, try and dps a few heroics/tank a few normals and easy heroics and gear up, its a fun class. (Mine isnt geared yet, i dont really have time for it with two raid days on my main and all, but i enjoy to play my dk when i can)

So if I understand all this correctly .. DKs are great for tanks with either Range or Face to Face DPS. the buffes they can give to a enhance Shaman or other DKs are great for adding to the team. Playing a Dk is kinda like a Warrior tank just added specks for thier casting. just don't play one if you can't learn the skills ..
DKs don't give buffs specifically do Shamans or other DKs.
They give buffs to the whole raid, very good ones. It's just that the buffs that a blood and frost DK provides is the same that a Shaman also provides. That means having both is redundant.
DK tanks work very different from a Warrior tank. The machanics are not really comparable but their general validity as tank is.
In the end a DK is just like a Warrior. Played different but the result is the same. Neither better nor worse.

My guild runs with 2 dk dps and 1 dk main tank.
our dk DPS is generally #1 and #2, if the rogues aren't above us by a small margin.

I love my DK, Im not decked out in gear, got a T9 set, and tyrannical beheader, and a few other things. I am not gemmed out, or all my stuff enchanted, but I still pull over 4k dps unbuffed, and can keep it going the whole time as long as my hand does not hurt anymore. This is all cuz I love this site and read pretty much all the helpful stickies on my classes. There are those bad ones though. Such as today, I just got my new Pally to 80 and was pulling more dmg than this decked out DK, he died quite often too, was always saying "gogogo", and telling us we were not going fast enough. All I can say is they are a great class, and just like the guy above said, research a little, it goes along way.
