I think, if done right, it is for the best.
Why? Thinking of starting a guild and using a DKP-based system, or are you in a guild that is having problems with said system?

My guild used to use DKP pre-TBC but they tossed it when TBC came out. We use an officer voting with request system now. Basically you send a tell to the officer leading the raid and then post the current gear the new gear would be replacing in /ra. The officers vote on it, get a member to /random if there's a tie. We have to trust our officers to not favor people, but we do, and they don't.
I imagine a system like that would only work in a fairly serious, established guild. Works great for us, though. I hate DKP :\.

DKP can be modified wtih additional rules such as one my guild has, a minimum attendance for being allowed to bid on tier 6 tokens and Archimonde / Illidan loot. The intention being that progress is smoothened if the most active players have the best gear. For the people that complain we tell them the hard truth - 60% is a pretty laughable attendance in a Black Temple farming guild, I know at least one guild in the same situation with 32 total active members, do the math yourself for what the average attendance is for them.
