So I have 3 healers at 50, priest, shaman and Druid. I just returned to the game recently and am playing with a buddy who mostly is DPS. We will end up getting into PvP so I decided I’d heal. We have been doing PvE stuff, and I’m not sure what it is, but disc feels lackluster. Questing and such it’s awesome. In a group, it feels like it gets behind so quick and then doesn’t have the throughput to catch up. It doesn’t feel like a “main healer” to me. Maybe I’m doing something wrong? I’m not sure. I was trying not to use one healer for PvE and one for PvP and my friend plays mage and hunter so goes well with disc. Am I possibly better swapping to holy for PvE content (raiding and mythic+) or even swapping to a different healer all together? I know people always say "play the one you like", and I genuinely like all 3, I just feel like I struggle with disc compared to the other two especially Resto Druid. When I swap to holy it doesn't feel near as lackluster as disc. I feel like I'm doing something wrong, but according to guides I've read and such, I'm following the rotation.

There is no "rotation", except for maybe schism in to penance for burst.
Disc is probably the least intuitive healer in the game, and it shows in the performance delta. For m+ both disc and holy are about the same, healing wise, but that's mostly because of azerite essences and traits. Still, you need to realize that atonement is your filler, don't expect it to save people most of the time. Also disc is probably the worst healer when it comes to saving others from their mistakes. You can plan for expected damage, but if someone just ^&*!ed up and is about to die, there is not much you can do short of throwing them a shield and spamming shadow mend. And if it's several people, you'll have to choose who will die.
You can make your life a bit easier by picking things like ToF and SC. The latter is the best thing disc has to reactive healing. You drop SC on the whole group and spam empowered shadow mends.
For raiding, they are, again, close on output, but disc has the advantage of bigger burst healing and a raid DR. But it comes at the cost of much more involved gameplay, with higher chance of mistakes. And mistakes are usually much more costly for disc.

I couldn't agree more. I haven't played disc a lot. But always, when I tried (and I'm still trying again and again), I experienced these situations. Disc is not for pugs or playing with low skilled people.
On the other hand if people get one cleave after another there is not any priest who can help them.
