Disc Priest advice (or swap to another healer?)
Return to board index
So I have 3 healers at 50, priest, shaman and Druid. I just returned to the game recently and am playing with a buddy who mostly is DPS. We will end up getting into PvP so I decided I’d heal. We have been doing PvE stuff, and I’m not sure what it is, but disc feels lackluster. Questing and such it’s awesome. In a group, it feels like it gets behind so quick and then doesn’t have the throughput to catch up. It doesn’t feel like a “main healer” to me. Maybe I’m doing something wrong? I’m not sure. I was trying not to use one healer for PvE and one for PvP and my friend plays mage and hunter so goes well with disc. Am I possibly better swapping to holy for PvE content (raiding and mythic+) or even swapping to a different healer all together? I know people always say "play the one you like", and I genuinely like all 3, I just feel like I struggle with disc compared to the other two especially Resto Druid. When I swap to holy it doesn't feel near as lackluster as disc. I feel like I'm doing something wrong, but according to guides I've read and such, I'm following the rotation.
The most important thing to remember is to have atonement on your target for your DPS abilities to heal them. 'Rotation' should be thought of as less strictly than a DPS. We respond to the healing that's needed, and that's always going to be more dynamic than a DPS rotation. For example, I often save penance for when I know heavy damage is incoming on the group.
Your healing cooldowns are also important. Rapture while deploying your shadowfiend can be really effective, and barrier for when your group is being bombarded.
Try to keep your DoT ticking over on enemy targets -- if you have atonements on your party, this acts like a powerful HoT.
Don't be afraid to spam a couple of shadowmends if someone is in trouble and you have no other means to heal them.
Disc is a really powerful healer, and I hope you enjoy it. It does require some knowledge of the damage patterns in a fight though because you need to prepare atonements and cooldowns for those situations. :) Disc is more like a druid in the sense that you need to prepare atonement like a druid needs to prepare her HoTs for incoming damage.
If you prefer a more reactive healer who responds to damage, then Shaman, Holy Paladin or Holy Priest might be more suitable --but give disc a chance!
