explorer.exe is just the GUI component for windows. If you end the process with the task manager and start wow with the task manager you can play wow without it.
However, its not really that big a deal unless your computer is trash. Disabling explorer wont stop background processes that actually hinder your performance alot more than the desktop.

Keep in mind if you are using Vista or 7 with the 3D theme, explorer is automatically suspended while you play in full screen. It still takes up memory, but it uses no CPU or video processing.
