Defense Gem Better Than Dodge/Parry?

It doesn't sound right. I need somebody to point out what I am doing wrong...
Subtle King's Amber
gives 20 Defense rating.
Subtle King's Amber
and
Flashing Cardinal Ruby
give 20 Dodge/Parry rating.
1 Defense skill, roughly 4.92 Defense rating, gives 0.04 Dodge, Parry, Block, and chance to be missed. That's 0.12% pure avoidance and 0.04 Block.
Thick King's Amber will give roughly 4 Defense rating, or ~0.48% pure avoidance and 0.16% Block.
20 Dodge/Parry give me ~0.30% dodge/parry chance, before diminishing returns (and after it falls down to ~0.25%).
So... Defense is more? Or what am I doing wrong?

I also noticed something similar.. I just changed my +8def +8 dodge gem (im still a bit over def cap) for a straight +16parry, hoping it would give me more combined avoidance, but nay. I dont remember the exact numbers, but it certanly went down.

Two things:
The avoidance from defense -is- subject to diminishing returns as well, just at a slightly lesser rate, since it suffers it not at the point of Def Rating -> Defense but rather Defense -> Miss/Dodge/Parry/Block
Also:
This (older) article is tasty, and talks about using either defense or dodge beyond 540, at a ratio of about 3:2-2:1
This (newer) article goes into the same thing, and updates the ratios :D
as a Paladin, I pretty much let socket bonuses decide, with some weight towards Def because of the extra block (as the ratio suggests).
Don't forget to include Stam in your considerations as well (and of course expertise/hit)!
Edit: Parry is pretty sucky, usually just letting it come from Def/items that just happen to have it is good.

I copied a macro for checking my status on the "102.x" cap..
Could someone with the knowledge create a macro to check if one should gem parry or dodge? :)

Read my post, right above yours..
If it's too long, start at the Code tag.
Thats not really a copy-paste macro.. I was reffering to the formula you wrote, but as a macro.

How hard is it to grab a calculator and divide 2 numbers?
Seriously, are you ^&*!ing retarded?
Really uncalled for. I did not ask you personally to make this.
It is a request for someone to make one, because i figured it would be a nice thing to have, not only for my self, but for others that came here asking the same question: Should i gem parry or dodge?
Simple answer: Copy-paste this macro.
You might wanna check this from time to time, and not have to whip out the ol' casio every time.
"Seriously".. hah.

I knew Defense suffers diminishing returns. I just ignored it, since it's not as bad (and extremely high values above 540 are rare). I didn't know dodge and parry suffer
that
badly - my 20 parry gems translate into 0.29-0.30%, and seeing that I am low on parry (~21%), I thought that DR wouldn't hurt them too much.
Still, defense seems way over.

All numbers are before dimishing returns.
You need 45.25 dodge/parry rating to get 1% dodge/parry.
You need 41 defense rating to get 1% of dodge, parry, miss.
Assuming you have (close to) equal amounts of dodge/parry, defense will give you more avoidance for your buck.
Since the nerf (though very slight) to dodge it's even better than before.
Defense does not have a seperate DR, the avoidance it adds suffers from respective ratings DR.

Like people are saying, diminishing returns count regardless of if it comes from dodge or defense, The only information I can gather is that Parry suffers diminishing returns more than dodge and Miss more than Parry.
This means that though it cannot be calculated simply,
I personally
will disregard % miss when estimating for gear upgrades that defense provides post 540/689.

/run local d,p = GetDodgeChance()-10,GetParryChance()-10 if d/p >= 1.88 then print("Need Parry") else print("Need Dodge") end
Got this macro from the gys over at the Ui & macro forum.
