WoW is what you want it to be (as long as you are fairly considerate and legal). If you want to do something other than duel, then do something other than duel. If he got on your case because you refused and he's following you around spamming /chicken then it's his problem, not yours.
I obviously don't know if that's happening, but just as an example.

I use an addon that automatically ignores duel requests. Most people take the hint and don't ask again. If they whine about it too much, there's always the ignore list.

Minimalist
has an option for auto declining duels.

I use AutoDecline, but there are plenty of others out there. Just go to any addon site and search for "duel" and you'll find several options.

If u just lay down a single duel flag i don't think its rude at all, its just a way of asking "do you want to duel?". I don't see why people think its rude to lay down a duel flag once out of the blue. Is it that much inconvenience to decline one duel flag? But it is rude doing it repeatedly.
This.
What's the difference between saying "Hey, wanna duel? =)" and just throwing down a flag? It's what it's in the game for... It's not the same thing as a blind invite, where you have no idea what the person wants you for.

You weren't being an unfair jerk. You're the one who pays 15 dollars a month for your account, not the person trying to duel you.
I HATE being asked to duel from twinks in the starting areas. I'm here to level my character to 80, not waste 1,000-3,000 gold making some ridiculous twink. You're obviously going to win, so don't even waste my time. That and when people 20+ levels ask you to duel. "Uhmm, no, idiot".
Blind Duel Requests are seriously one of the most annoying things about World of Warcraft. Actually, blind anything is the most annoying thing about World of Warcraft. The only time I ever accept anything that's blindly requested to me, is if i'm already in LFG or LFM and someone sends me an invite to their instance, (being the same instance that i'm queued for) without sending me a tell to confirm that i'm willing to run the instance with them. I mean, it's obvious I want to do the instance or else I wouldn't be in LFG for it.
The only thing that's worse than a blind group/duel request, is a blind guild invite. I mean, come on, are you seriously that desperate/disrespectful that you can't ask me like a mature person? Maybe your guild sucks so terribly that you knew if you asked me to join, i'd instantly decline and trash on your guild? Who cares? I'd be more willing to join a guild when they send me a tell, than a blind invite.
Sheesh!

Random blind duel requests make me want to punch kittens... please, think of the kittens.

The term "blind duel request" doesn't make sense. But requesting a duel...they are...requesting a duel.
By asking "duel m8?"...they are...requesting a duel.
The mind boggles. Is pressing escape really that hard?
