That says 'cast counterspell on my focus target, if that target exists and is not dead and I'm able to cast harmful spells on it,
otherwise
just cast counterspell on my current target. Also it makes you stop casting <_< >_>

Yeah so, if you have a focus, it'll use it on that, otherwise it'll use your target. Would you prefer something like:
/stopmacro
/stopcasting
/cast Counterspell; Counterspell
...so that it doesn't stop your casting if there's nothing to do?
I guess I don't press it unless I know where it's going :).

What does it mean to use a "focus" rather than a "target"? Whatever your mouse is mousing over?

I know I whore wowwiki but it usually rocks. Post back if that doesn't answer your question :).

Presumably, you have another macro that sets your focus?
An example would help. Let's say I'm a mage going up against two mobs, and the one I'm not targeting starts to cast a spell. At what point would I have set that mob as my focus?
It seems like this would be helpful to a healer who needed to always keep track of their tank, but I'm trying to understand how this optimizes my button-mashing as a spell-slinger.

Alternatively, you can bind a key to assign your focus. I use Backslash.
It's mostly useful for situations where:
there's a healer but you want to be doing something else until you need to interrupt it
there's some CC on some mob and you want to be able to reapply it without changing your target
there's something you want to do to someone consistently while doing other random things to other people
...or something along those lines. Some people combine the focus assignment into the macros that use focus and use key modifiers to separate the sections of the macro. I just use my Backslash and then have the pertinent macros set up to recognize it.

TheOnyx:
In the 2 mob example you mentioned, a mouseover counterspell might be more appropriate if the fight occurred impromptu, and you did not have time (or did not care to bother) to set up a focus target beforehand.
If, however, those two mobs were 1)a boss, and 2)the boss' spellcasting friend, then the focus macro might make a great deal of sense. You could /focus the spallcasting add, and target the boss.
It is absolutely possible to incorporate the /focus portion into the macro itself, as well. For example, a polymorph macro might look like this:
#showtooltip Polymorph
/focus
/cast Polymorph
That's 'Set my current target to be my focus IF my existing focus target is dead OR does not exist, OR I'm holding a modifier key (alt/ctrl/shift). THEN cast polymorph on my focus target.'

Eheh. I understand the relatively friendly Blizzard syntax well, but I'm closer to the newbie end when it comes to lua script macros. Thank you kindly, though :]
The truth is, I find this sort of thing interesting. Sometimes, it's like solving a puzzle.
