You are supposed to do the quests in your area (leveling).

There should be npc's around where you started with exclamation marks over their head offering quests that will guide you through the zone.

Normally there's a small tutorial when starting a new char. The blue exclamation marks on the bottom of your UI tell you some stuff that you should know.
As for the "what should I do now" part, your assumption was correct; start leveling by doing all quests in the area you're currently in, when they're depleted move on to the next quest hub. I recommend getting QuestHelper addon for faster leveling, or if you're interested in the actual purpose of the things that quests tell you to do, read the text and take your time.
For financial purposes you'll want to get a profession, personally I found mining to be easy/fast money, because higher level players that want to level it don't mind buying ore off the Auction House.
If you pair it with Herbalism you get double the money for little less effort. While gold might not be all that important at low levels, it's required to get mounts/training so it always is useful.
At max level you will want to get glyphs/enchants for your gear. Beware gold sellers, don't EVER buy anything from them.
The game begins at the max level, when it's the best idea to get a guild (hardcore or casual, depending on your play style) and start raiding.
That's just some stuff you would wanna do, but as always, do what you want and enjoy the game in your own fashion.

When you play the game for the first time, a box that looks something like this will appear above your action bar notifying you of how to play. Each appears when you experience something new in the game and if you click the box, a small window will open up explaining in detail what it is you're experiencing.
I believe the first explains to you that NPCs (non-playable characters) with a ! above their head will have a quest to offer you. To talk to them, right-click that NPC and a window will open up. You can read whatever they have to say and choose to Accept or Decline the quest. You can accept up to 25 different quests at a time, so pick up as many as you can around you and enjoy.
If you're not getting those little boxes (for some strange reason), you can simply turn them on by going into the Interface menu. Press Esc until the menu pops up, click Interface, on the left column click Help at the bottom, and check Tutorials. I THINK that should do it.

We were all like you once..some more the other..WoW was my first foray into MMO's.
The internet is a great place to research info. WoWwiki is a good place to start.
some tips:
1.) Pick 2 professions. Preferably money making ones like mining/herb/skinning..since this is your first character. The others require mats and can leave you gold starved.
Take up first aid since this will come in handy later on and take up fishing as this can be a third source of income.
2.) Locate your trainer and return to him every 2 levels to learn more abilities.
3.) Create a slew on different characters..take some time to level them up a bit and see which one you like the best.
4.) Get some addons that will assist you. Mapping..questhelping..etc.
5.) Always locate the flight master when you come to a new area.
6.) Eventually look into joining a guild. I don't recommend high leveled ones..look for ones with similar leveled players so you can quest and level together.
7.) Learn WoW lingo and etiquette.
8.) Not sure what type server your on..if a normal server.. disable you PvP flag(if you name color is green it is on/blue off). If a pvp server..get use to ganking(unprovoked attack by opposite faction)..just comes with the territory. If you don't like it then switch.
enjoy the game :)

I recommend getting QuestHelper addon for faster leveling, or if you're interested in the actual purpose of the things that quests tell you to do, read the text and take your time. You know, there's nothing stopping you from using QH
and
reading the quest text. Turn turn off scrolling quest text because anyone smart enough to turn on a computer should read faster than that.

i think the most important thing to help new characters is to say: GOOD JOB! you have successfully gone to wowhead to find information. along with wowwiki, this is a trend that will help you be better than the other people who play this game.
good luck, have fun, find a helpful guild :D
