Complicated, not all that useful, yet fun idea.

So while watching Ulduar: The movie the idea came to me,
The ability to join a raid as an observer
It would be awesome to be able to fly around seeing how your friends or guild fight, it could be used to teach players tactics without them actually having to participate, and it could be used for machinima or similar purposes.
What do you think? Wouldn't that be cool? Seems do-able, just make players fly and become 'invisible' to the environment, add a button to 'join as observer' or 'promote to observer'

Its a cool idea. Would also be cool if you could watch other factions going in a raid.

Person in my guild had this idea too.
Only thing I can add- perhaps an achievement called "I like to watch" could be added, for say, watching a successful raid.
why do you need an achievement? You aren't working for it at all, just watching...

They could do an achievement for watching every raid.
I mean, they've done achievements for less.

I mean, they've done achievements for less. One time I got disconnected at the start of a fight and reconnected right before the boss died and I got an achievement.
Then there's the feats of strength for logging on during anniversaries. Those take WORK.
There's a game where you get an achievement for hitting the start button ;D

I bet all those server/world-first aspirant guilds would love all the additional lag form having creepy people watch them. It adds to the
challenge!

Well you wouldn't just barge into peoples raids, you would need to get invited as an observer.

This idea seems a bit more complicated than what you guys think. Would the observer be able to see noticed from Deadly Boss Mods? Would they see debuffs on players? Boss cast bar? If you are getting a bird's eye view of a fight but can't actually see the mechanics and what is going on, then being able to observe won't mean much. Personally, I think learning tactics takes first-hand, personal experience. I only learn so much from reading The Strategist or watching a tankspot video. I need to experience the fight.
I don't know see you got this from but i never said any of those things would be limited, the observer sees the game as if he were part of the raid but does not interact in any way with it and it with him, this does not mean he does not see the usual interface features. I see the problem with addons, but it would involve a simple fix, perhaps from the game itself by not technically considering observers a party members and instead as some kind of bystander, and it would not replace current methods of raid education but rather compliment them.

If they did implement some sort of observer system, they would have to put certain restrictions on the obeservers way to communicate. (In order not to hinder the raid)
For example:
• The observer cannot communicate in /1. <Raid> General Chat
• The observer cannot /say or /emote while observing.
They could also further restrict who can observe by invitation only to those who have the raid ID.
Also, your camera could be able to follow a specific player.*
***This is not by any means to show the screen of the raid member, doing so would require massive data transfer between several areas and severally increase lag.
I agree with all these points, although i assume if a raid is ok with someone observing them he probably is doing so in the best intentions of the guild so him speaking would not necessarily be a threat. A follow feature would also work, but as you said, just follow, as you would when you /follow someone, not as in becoming absorbed in their character.
I'd also like to further stress the key idea that observers should be able to fly around to give them a much greater and broader view of the situations.

This sounds eerily familiar, but I can't tell from where.

A number of FPS games offer this - for example, I don't know how many times I've accidentally joined a battle in progress in Urban Terror as an observer instead of joining a team to fight, as I meant to do.
I think it would be a decent idea, with the appropriate precautions (must have permission to observe, option to mute the observers, etc.).

I like it. I think there is a certain portion of the WoW community who maybe don't have the time, gear, skill, or inclination to Raid, and it would allow them an opportunity to see sections of the game they might otherwise never see.
I mean...youtube and all that's great...but often, the quality is lacking (through nobodies fault really, that's not a criticism of the posters), and there is no sense of being there, and really understanding what is happening.
I can't add anything about how to make it work and so on, because I wouldn't know where to start, but yeah, it would definitely be nice.
10 months play, and zero actual Raids here :(
