Or do I need to progress through other regular 80 instances first?
For what it's worth I'm a Ret Paladin and like to think I'm better than your average keyboard pounder.

Pretty much just hop in, come out with your epics. That's it.

Its very do-able as a new 80. Ive done it now with a level 79 healer. Its certainly more challenging but very possible.

It can be moderately rough on a healer, but tanking and DPSing it didn't seem that hard. First boss (three champions) is pretty trivial, though I can see the hardest setup (warrior, rogue, shaman) being maybe a hair more difficult. The second boss, the Paladin guy is trivial but the chick can be rough to heal. All the time that the nightmare guy is up she keeps spamming spells are random targets that do like 5-6k damage. I know it was a slight struggle for me at times to keep heals on the tanks and yet keep DPS and myself up as well.
The Black Knight is simple. Phase 1 with the Ghoul add, it can be burst down quickly and the Black Knight doesn't seem to do a heck of a lot of damage. Phase 2 is easy enough as long as people are smart enough to move out of the ground AoE and either burn ghouls or constantly move away from exploding ones. Phase 3 is a burn phase. There's heavy healing on a random target (Marked for Death) as well as normal tank healing, and everyone takes a moderate amount of AoE.
Overall it's kind of a push over and easy epic loot. Once you do it a couple times it becomes pretty easy. Chances are you'll join a group with members that have already run it a dozen or more times.

For DPS, not really.
Tanks need to meet the basic requirements, Healers need to be on their toes, but you can pull through a low DPS.

I did it as a fresh 80 Ret Pally. I did have TS Destroyer and 2 other TS pieces. I put the enchant that does additional 120 damage to undead (the scroll in the AH was like 3 gold) and it helps a lot with daily's and the Black knight.
Just work on your Jousting before you try it, and remember you can switch horses mid-fight if you get beat down.

We ran it with a healer in greens (half green/half blue gear, zero epics) and had no problem. Granted our tank and some of our dps were ulduar geared which made it easier, but regular ToC is really easy. Normal 80 dungeons are designed to be run by people that aren't geared for heroics so it was never going to be that difficult. Heroic ToC on the otherhand is quite a bit harder than other heroics in terms of incoming damage so you need geared people for that.
