I think those are probably just very extreme closeups of a blue gem that's embedded in the hurty end of the weapon. The gnome that took the picture was probably out drinking with his dwarf friends too late the previous night.

I don't have a drinking problem. I drink; I get drunk; I fall down -- no problem.
