Bows v Guns -- The Answer

Having been a recent 'victim' to this situation I can say that your ranged weapon choice should be a gun.
My determination is based on the end game situation... there are hardly any bows for lvl 80!
I would recommend anyone who questions this to look at wowhead and compare the selection between bows and guns at lvl 80.
I've had a bow since lvl 1, but will be switching to guns shortly.

My gripe is that there are less options to upgrade to higher and higher DPS.
Unfortunately for bow users... Blizzard assumes you're either a hardcore raider or a arena guru and you'll be able to upgrade. I can't do either due to other time commitments, so I'll switch to guns and buy a nice one in the AH.

If one skill is low, it doesnt take long to max it if you find a good weapon
1. go to Outland
2. find Mr.Boom
3. auto-attack and pet on passive
4. ...
5. profit

I like bows because they match my Night Elf hunter better than a gun. Guns are for Dwarves.
I'm currently having to compromise and use the ToC-10 crossbow because the only bow available in ToC-10 comes from the tribute chest. Le Sigh.
Guns drop from innumerable raid bosses, but the bows are few and far between.
Preference has nothing to do with weapon skill. I just prefer "thwip thwip" to "bang bang."

beg pardon, who is Mr. Boom? I only ask cause I got an alt to 80 with a BoA weapon, and now need to level others--from 0. If there is any easy way, I would love to know :)

It's
Dr. Boom
, and he's an NPC in Netherstorm near Area 52 with a massive health pool because he's part of a quest in which you're supposed to use bombs or some other such device to kill him. It's possible to stand at range and shoot him without aggroing him (I think he's stationary) and avoid the bombs he sends your way.
I've never used him for leveling a weapon skill personally, but I hear it's all the rage.

Ah poo, he wont work for melee. Thanks for the FYI though, I had never heard of him

I personally prefer guns. Not only are they easier to get your hands on (while leveling, and end-game), I love the sound... Of course, I mainly PvP, so it's great unloading on someone with a bang :D

The answer for 3.2, the
Gun.
It has a slower speed than the (cross)
Bow
which nudges it that little bit ahead.
If you aren't raiding Trial of the Grand Crusader 25, then you might want to look at
this gun
from Onyxia 25. My realm is totally horrible for pugging, but successful Onyxia 25 runs happen all day, so this isn't too unreachable if you ask me. And! It is even better than
the bow
from Algalon 25!
There are plenty of epic weapons out there, but indeed for this patch, the Gun is reigning supreme, much to the dismay of many
Troll Hunters
.

One thing you ALL are missing, is the racial bonus you get by using weapons for your class.
I have a troll hunter, he gets a 1% crit boost from bow specialization.
A dwarf get a boost from guns.
There are guns that can be made by engineers that are quite good if you are starting out at lvl 80.
Pray tell , is there a x-bow, or bow recipe in game for engineers? NO
When has there been a new release of ammo? bah humbug
I made it a point to train up on all the weapons that I might use, so I can switch without loss of dps
when I am lucky to win da roll on a better weapon. I even carry an extra scope along just in case. 8-)
edit for typo's

Personally, I'd drop that 1% crit in a heartbeat if it meant an overall better weapon. I play a troll, and have used guns all the way up.
