I play with 9600GT at the moment and also have loads of problems after 3.1 and introduction of new shadows. Dont QQ to much then. Blizz seems to screw both sides equally. I hope that promised 3.2 fixes will help a little.
Shadows are pretty much ALWAYS a problem in any game, and especially in places like dalaran where a lot of players run around.
I really wouldn't say that any side "has been screwed" on a feature that has been "improved" or even recently added to the game. Quite simple - the shadows before weren't as good and took less power to render. That, in combination of other graphics modifications just means your card has to work more. But, that is why you have the option to lower stuff like that.
Of course, there
IS
the possibility that the programmers coded sloppily, but I'm not able to see what they did there, so I'm just going to "trust" them there ;-)
But, now I must admit that I'm happy that I've always been an NVIDIA fan ^^
you should get more ram, bro.
Actually, that not true, as he is referring to 512 MB VRAM, which is more than ample for WOW. There is a
minimal performance gain
in having more ram than that. the FPS increase from, say, a 896MB vs. 1792MB GX280 ish class card is really not worth mentioning.
More important is the memory bus width - especially the larger the monitor. Often, video ram is used as an advertising gimmick - usually being clocked lower etc.
Edit:
And, I usually run on settings on 1920x1080.. Sometimes, just sometimes, it can be a curse. Especially in places like Uld where you have to get out of a rune on the floor, and you have all these flashing lights and "smoke and fire" it can be a real problem.

why then blizzard mentioned shadow fixes in 3.2 change log
amirite?
OFC you are right, if there is a documented error on their part.. I said i was blindly trusting the devs skill ;-)
But, shadows are still always a pain for graphics cards..
Durr hurr like nvidia have no problems in WoW
/sigh
I DID NOT say nvidia cards were perfect... There are driver problems, code problems, etc, that can be potentially cause by game devs or the driver company w/e..
You have those potential problems with every card and every game. I just said that I'm glad I'm an nvidia fan, because I just like them, and hearing that a game is being optimized for my hardware is good news, is it not?

well, some software doesnt run well or at all on linux, macos, vista, whatever.... you cannot have a "one size fits all" if using different software / hardware... it doesnt work.. AMD and Intel CPUs use different commands.. video cards go about things differently, etc..
the only way to go around that is:
- skip all the super features and use a "dumbed down" software that doesn't utilize ANY features not available on another platform
- allow only one type of hardware and OS to be manufactured (which is obviously crappy), or require them to be standardized and operate in the same exact way..
both of these things are harmful to the markets development because the competition is removed, or at least softened...
you buy the video card that you think performs the best due to certain features that is has to offer, right?
maybe an ATI card cuz it supports directx 10.1 instead of only 10 like nvidia cards do... would you complain if game x runs on 10.1 and youre one of the "lucky people" who can utilize the stuff?
so, yeah.. i really see it as a normal process.. the technical groundwork has been done.. the software works on both systems, but is being optimized for one.. better that than let that "power" be wasted?
granted, that optimization is probably being done based on the proportion of nvidia vs ATI users, but still..

As far back as I remember the nVidia logo has been advertised with WOW. And as far back as I can recall, ATi has always had very poor drivers.

well I have a 4870 and at 1900x1200 I get close to 200fps so ati is screwed ?
thank God for the 4800 series...seems that Nvidia started cutting prices right after it hit the market.
