Honestly, it sounds like you don't want to be a hunter. Even in end game raiding, a pet is 10 - 15% of your dps as MM or SV...No matter what, you're reliant. Is it possible to level from 10 - 80 as MM or SV? Most certainly. Is it more difficult. Absolutely. We are a pet class.

Your pet is your survivability, without it you die. BM is the best leveling spec because your pet is tough as nails. Try something else, MM or SV, but dont get mad when you spend more time drinking because you had to nuke something because your pet couldnt hold aggro for crap or got destroyed because you pulled two or more mobs.

If you don't want to go with BM, go Marksmen, you get good mana regen and higher dps coming from the hunter istead of the pet.

As someone who is currently leveling a hunter, (lvl 66 now) I would say MM is a good spec to try out early on. I went MM around lvl 20 and liked it, but my pet couldn't hold aggro.. went back to BM. I had better results with a ferocity pet due to the higher damage (more aggro) but BM was just a bit easier at that level. I also had a tenacity pet, and once i got thunderstomp for him i tried out MM again, and for single target killing it worked well and i was even able to do some aoe grinding in felwood in my early 50's. That being said, i have some heirloom items (pvp gun, shoulders, and the pve chest) so my dps would be better than a hunter in quest greens. BM is easy mode and you'll never die, but you also have a lot of escape tools as as MM if the pull goes bad, and with a tenacity pet he'll be pretty tough.
I have wolf in the stable, but I rarely use him, I like being able to send in the bear to 5+ mobs, hit mend pet and volley spam. I'll usually pull some off the pet, but i'll just feign death and let him establish aggro again for a few seconds and volley some more. Against single targets they are dead before they reach me anyways. I recently tried out SV when I hit 64, it works pretty good but I'm thinking I'll go back to MM, it just suits me better. DPS is pretty comparable between SV and MM, both of which are a bit higher than BM. Only way to find out what you like is to try it out, I'd suggest dual speccing at 40 if you have the gold.
