I lvl'd as Sub around 50 something, at that point changed to combat:Swords, and absolutely loved it, tho im not saying Sub didnt serve me well, it did, in a lot of places i was able to sneak past packs of mobs i'd never get past without (improved) stealth.
The
only
reason i changed, is kinda lame. I had a sword drop, think it was a
Crystal Sword of the Monkey
, paired it with a
Rune Sword of Agility
from ah, and then i went to work, and GOD i loved it! And as combat, the biggest reason i stealth up to the boss im about to rip a new one, is because have you see how trolls look when they just stand? they look hideous, and they
look
like they're slacking. So i stealth, and unsheath my weapons, just because it looks good! xD
Yeah ok im kinda pathetic sometimes, but hey, it's my game too! =P

Can we stop posting personal non-tested experience?
(Or atleast do, but dont go denying that combat isnt faster)
It has proven that combat rogues level faster than the other 2 speccs.
And for more then just the reason of stealth.

Off Topic:
Decided to finally level a rogue for the first time in my long and illustrious WoW career. Chose Gnome b/c I want to experience lvling through Dun Morogh, Loch Modan, and Redridge Mountains before the Cataclysm hits, I plan to lvl Engineering, and I opted out of going Dwarf b/c I'm race changing my lvl 45 Draenei Shaman into one who is going to start in Aerie Peak after Cata hits (roleplaying his Wildhammer heritage).
On Topic:
I planned to spec Sub b/c I was attracted to how awesome Shadowstep looked, and Rogues are ripping apart everything in lower level dungeons. However, when I hit 10 and reviewed the trees I surprised myself when I ultimately chose Assassination. Deadly Momentum was very attractive to me, and I was already planning to wield daggers exclusively due to the Gnome's racial. The tree itself just seems like it'll be a lot of fun to progress with, and I'll be sure to dual spec Sub when I hit 40.
Also, I loved playing Mutilate decks in Magic the Gathering :-)

This thread for some reason is still getting longer...
I thought it was already assumed that Combat was the fastest leveling spec. Though, i would have to admit, just because something is faster doesn't necessarily mean its the easiest or most fun. I suppose what wasn't REALLY brought up, is what you consider "best." Is it fastest? Easier to play? More fun? Or the safest/least amount of danger involved (via ganking, harder to solo quests, etc.)

Well you have to think, if you have a healer and you, you pretty much aoe every quest, and healer heals you...no down time. = Fastest leveling, as it is said that questing is one of the fastest ways to level.
So yes, combat is the fastest, and least weapon dependent. But all the specs have their ups and downs. But best doesn't necessarily mean fastest, could also be easiest. Combat is pretty simple and straight forward, doesn't mean you cant @#$% it up...just look at huntards...i was told BY a hunter it was the easiest to level, but also the easiest to mess up. But that was just his opinion. (no offense to you hunters out there, i don't know yet as i am still leveling one)

Yes, mostly because of blade flurry, raw dmg, no need for stealth (& recuperate).

done a little bit of testing for higher levels, and combat still seems to be "the" leveling spec, while sub has superior burst, it has become even more reliant on positioning and buildup...
and you just can't beat combats survivability
as cap has been saying
play what you enjoy
your spec from 80-85 should probably be
combat
keep recuperate and SnD up at all times through deadly momentum and chain pulling
use CDs as necessary, not as available
revealing strike before you eviscerate or in the off chance you need to use KS (you shouldn't)
slow/fast wound/wound
stack agi
spam FoK on 3 or more targets as long as you continue to melee and won't drop SnD/recup
keep health potions on hand for emergencies

If you want to own in bgs, sub.
If you want to lvl fast in dungeons/quests, combat.
Ps
Dualspecc.
