There are many strategies in WSG, these are the most common.
There are 3 to 5 defenders and 5 to 7 offense, basic cap the flag type stuff, I call this 'basic'. This method doesn't win very often on it's own, but it is easy to get across.
Turtling is one of the methods that is harder to get across to people without a premade or a 2-0 score. It works best if you have bad rolls with low-geared players. In turtling the entire team hides in their flag room. After a huge wave of enemies comes a single player, preferably a druid grabs the enemy flag and runs it across while the enemy is in their graveyard. If the sprints are up, it is impossible to stop him (he goes at 100% speed the entire run). This method really cannot be beat, but it cannot win very often either.
Steamrolling is my favorite strategy. This can be done with medium to hard gear, but if you have bad gear, your steamroll will be facerolled. In steamrolling an entire team goes to the enemy flag room, grabs the flag, and comes back together. This strategy can be easily beat with turtling (more time to set up) unless the steamroll significantly outgears the turtle or has an epic fc.
Experimental is a strategy I am thinking up right now that would theoretically beat a turtle. It is a modified steamroll. In this strategy five people come in, preferably at least three plate wearers or 2500+ players to draw attention. A warlock grabs the flag and teleports to his Demonic Circle that is on the second floor, making himself easily seen. Then he runs to the wall, where a second warlock picks it up and teleports it down off the edge of the wall into the tunnel, where a druid picks it up from stealth and runs it across the field.
The strategies in Arathi Basin are a little more complex.
One strategy is the most basic, and is often tried on my alliance side battlegroup. In this strategy, one team tries to hold LM or GM and BS. The problem with this strategy is that it often turns in to Musical Bases.
Another strategy is Musical Bases, also called 'zerg'. This strategy is good for poorly geared players. In this strategy, an entire team rolls down many bases. This is very useful if you leave a 3-5 man guard, but most zergs end up with no defense, and are easily beaten with a 2 to 3 man group following them recapping their bases.
A third strategy is for people trying to do AB Perfection. This strategy requires a significant outgearing of the enemy. The entire team runs across all three bases in the middle (BS, GM, LM), kill anyone there, and go on to cap the farm/stables. This strategy is hard to beat, but the achivement is easily destroyed if you can realize the strategy early on. If you realize what they are doing before they get the base (IE you realize that they haven't capped anything) then you can recall all 15 people, because it is impossible to kill 15 people and cap the flag in under 30 seconds. If they have already started graveyard camping you, hope for either a mass respawn or a stealthie ninjaing something behind them.
Alterac Valley is relatively simple.
One strategy is to zerg the boss. This requires a very well geared tank and several healers. In this strategy the entire raid runs to the boss and kills him with all towers up.
Another strategy is to turtle. This is a good strategy against a zerg, or if you know that you are outgeared. In this strategy the entire team lines up behind either the towers or the bridge and waits for the enemy. This is useful for grinding honorable kills as well. Be sure not to break the turtle (AKA go around the enemy team) as while this seems profitable, if your entire team jumps then the enemy is at your base, while you have to cross the entire map to get to the enemy, as well as capping the graveyard and towers.

After these three vanilla battlegrounds, there is Eye of the Storm, which was added in The Burning Crusade.
One strategy for EotS involves the flag. The flag is very unreliable, and most good strategies to not rely on it. This strategy is good for when you have a *slight* advantage over the other team. In this basic strategy, you cap your two towers and then go for the flag, going about 5-5-5 for tower-flag-tower. This strategy is volatile at best, but it is the easiest to understand, and thus most used.
Another strategy involves a more steady way to win, but can turn into Musical Nodes, much like Arathi Basin. In this strategy, you split your forces. 3 on one of your towers, 3 on the other, and 7 on one of the enemy towers. The idea being that as soon as you capture the enemy tower, you can try to keep it, but if you do keep it then the enemy typically captures one of your nodes, and then you capture the one that they left. It is VERY hard to pull off. I have found that the best thing to do is just capture the node and pull back, splitting your defenders 7-8 between your towers. The SLIGHT advantage in the beginning will win the battleground if the enemy doesn't capture the flag too much. Make sure that they don't.
The third strategy is for people going for EotS perfection, and this is one of the hardest perfections to pull off besides AB and maybe AV, and requires amazing outgearing of the enemy. The idea is to split your forces 7-8 and run across the bridge, killing every enemy on them and eventually capping the enemy nodes, then sending two people back to capture your nodes and then graveyard camping the enemy. This is trickier than Arathi Basin, because stealthers have such an easy time of it ninjaing nodes.
Isle of Conquest was added in Wrath of the Lich King. There are really two strategies for it.
One strategy is to capture the docks and the workshop and then use them to burn down the enemy gates.
The second is to capture the hangar, and then float down into the enemy base and use Seaforium to destroy it.
Strand of the Ancients was also added in Wrath of the Lich King.
One strategy is to zerg. This is the most successful strategy, but the hardest to make your team follow. In this strategy, everyone who can gets in a demolisher and destroys one of the enemy gates, slowly making their way to the titan relic. This is the most successful and WILL get you within the 3 minuite timer every time unless you are facing a premade or people split up between the gates.
The second strategy gets you the most honor, assuming you win, but takes longer and makes you less likely to win. In this strategy you split up. Demos on the left stay on the left, demos on the right stay on the right.
On defense I can't really help you, except to tell you that if the enemy is good, they will stack demolishers on after another after another. The only way to beat this is to DPS them all equally. If you only kill the one in front, then the other two will have free time with the gate for over a minuite- and you don't want that.
And never forget on offense to stack demolishers, most noob teams won't kill them properly.

problem is, 90% of the people that is in the bg will never learn what the flag in bgs really do ....like do we need to capture or defend that?
