A good way of testing out high level playstyles is on the PTR, you have to play to a fairly high level before you can asses the various playstyles of most classes.

I agree, though I think that it doesn't hurt to ask about specs. Cookie Cutter is boring, but if you create a spec and make a stupid mistake with that someone else may be able to point it out. Are they always right? No. But the advice may help you out when you begin to use it.

Well, an opinion is suppose to be bias. If someone starts a posting that asks for "The best PVP spec" or the "best weapon in PVP," will get the opinion of those who have tried certain specs or weapon. But if you don't want to hear a "bad" opinion you shouldn't ask other people for opinion. You should be expecting all kinds of feedback and it's still your decision to chose what to listen to. You should feel good that someone is at least taking a moment out of their life to give you an opinion which originated from their experience playing WOW - which makes it bias of course!
Like everything else, someone has different view on what is the "most" efficient way to use talent points or spend their time with. For me, I have no time to do a 3 hour instance so I have no chance for epic drops. So the best way for me to get epics is PVP. I do not have any clue on what is the best spec for tanking so I wont even try to voice an opinion about instances LOL.
