No, I don't remember, but I had to do a report in my World History class last year. We could choose one group of people from any time periods around the world. I decided to go with Assassin's of medieval and ancient times.
Since there was little to no hygiene, and plenty of disease and bacteria, that was often the only way to prevent gangrene and other diseases.
Right, I know ancient medicine called for lots of amputations, but that's not the part that concerns me. I'm really referring to your conjecture that real assassins used hidden blades that pop out and are prone to cutting their own hands.
Well, no, they didn't use hidden blades like in Assassin's Creed. They would often just hide a knife or blade under their sleeve, and approach from behind. Often times to speed up their draw time, half-way through they would grip the blade, and swing it around their fingers, and into grip. It would usually leave a cut, but if it cut bad enough, about 1cm in, then they would need to amputate later, but only if they get anything inside the wound.
Lolwut? Is this a universal problem for all assassins worldwide throughout the ages?
I'd hope assassins could draw their blades without harming themselves.
Also, wouldn't a severed finger have a higher chance of infection than a smaller cut?
I really don't understand this post.
Even to this day, they amputate limbs and such because of gangrene.

Ah, but you just said cut off the finger to prevent infection, not to prevent the spread of infection. But bad assassin is bad in any case and shouldn't cut themselves. Not that any of this has any relevance.
