Arthas and Stupid Evil.

Has anyone felt that The Lich King has been leaning towards the Stupid Evil alignment as of late?
For those unaware of what that is, allow me to explain.
In real life, for obvious reasons, there is no "good" or "evil". Everyone has their own moral code and such, shades of grey, you get the idea.
This doesn't work for fantasy settings where The Ragtag Adventurers™ need someone to brutally murder and feel good about doing it.
Thus, mustache-twirling, cat-petting, fnar-fnaring baddies were invented to serve as unquestionably evil without jumping off the deep end towards
nigh-Hitler levels
some other comparison that does NOT invoke Godwin's Law.
The problem here is that, in more realistic franchises, this strains belief a little. Why would anyone actually by evil for evil's sake? It makes no sense, especially in worlds where it can be empirically proven that you DO have a soul and the you WILL be punished for being evil.
So, modern villains became either incredibly self-centered, being evil for personal gain, well-intentioned extremists, being evil for the questionable benefit of the masses, or just nuts.
In the Death Knight starting zone, Arthas was the second category - it seemed like paradise in undeath, eternal life and a common purpose among the Scourge. This was also suggested by Blizzard - that by expansion's end, you wouldn't even be sure you WANTED to kill Arthas.
Recently, however, effectively starting a little with the Wrathgate and going downhill from there, Arthas has completely abandoned his utopian outlook, which I really liked and thought made his character much more interesting.
But now, Arthas is openly talking about causing war, suffering, pain, and eternal anguish not only among the Horde and Alliance, but among his own troops. I understand Blizzard wants to give us motivation, but what ever happened to the early on moral ambiguity we were promised so often pre-Beta? That's what I bought this expansion for.
Discuss.

Hey, at least he's not as bad as the Captain Planet villains.
"We must destroy and desecrate the world's resources!"
"Why?"
"Because! Because it's awesome!"

I think the promise of immortality was made by the cult of the dam to convince people to join.
I never really remember the litch king ever bargaining with an offer of making a utopia and having mortality.

Captain planet lore
And all of captain planets villains had a reason to "mess up the planet"

Looten Plunder "He's suave, he's urbane, and he plunders the planet for profit. He rules his vast multinational empire with an iron fist, eliminating anyone or anything that stands in his way. Plunder considers ecologists to be fools with no understanding of the real world. "
..."Evil" capitalist that wants to make a profit by selling things made from natural resources. Oh please will Al Gore save me from the horrors of a free market economy!
Captain Texas would of made a far better cartoon

"Go wipe out this species!"
"Why?"
"Because I want a rare tiger blood jacuzzi. Don't worry, I'll give you a wand for it!"
"Deal."

"...even though you can't actually wield wands."
I don't know about the Lich King though. Back when he was Ner'zhul, he had a pretty concrete goal in mind - to get away from the Legion's grasp. Arthas had pretty concrete ideas too - to rid Azeroth of the undeath and to bring his subjects to peace and happiness. Some of those ideas stayed with him even when he turned death knights - he still cared for his troops in some perverse way. However ever since the two merged... who is the Lich King? What does this being want, and why does it seem so simplistic?
I am actually leaning back to the theory that the Lich King is actually mostly Arthas. But more about that - when I am getting late for classes!

Okey,i've always wondered this. The goal of the LK is to wipe out all forms of life from the univerce and make them all undead, amirite?
Let's assume he succeeds, then what? No,seriously. He would yield ultimate power.....that would do nothing. He would be the only sentient life form on the cosmos. He would be all-mighty but completely alone, everyone else would be controlled by him, no opposition. He would have basically isolate himself for eternety, which is hell for me. And at the end, if his goal was to leave him alone he could have kindly asked instead of destroying the univerce

And like my strategy for RTS games, when he had what he deemed were enough 'soldiers' he'd strike back at the Legion, taking over planet by planet.....Nah, it would just take one high ranking member of the Legion to face off against good ole Lich King... and he'd be dead for the final time; after all, the Legion gives the power, the Legion takes it away.

If this was true, Kil'jaeden wouldn't have Illidan do the job for him.Kil'jaeden couldn't get back onto Azeroth, he sent Illidan to do the dirty work. That might be why the Scourge tried so hard to invade the Sunwell plateau when it became known it was reactivated; stopping Kil'jaeden from being summoned.

honest to god dude, you deserve a medal for that comment xD.
at least arthas is not the stereotype villian that allways laughs for no reason at all (when have we seen heroes laughing for no reason? or laughing after they win?) or worst the type of villian that explain his entire plan right after a battle so that we can stop said plan after he's dead.
Personally, blizz kinda ripped us off, they promised a lot of interaction with the lich king on this expantion, but we only got a little interaction.
on the DK starting zone we do interact with him quite a lot.
but after that we only see him, he says something, inexplicably ports away, and we move on.
tis happens on borean tundra, drak'taron keep, utgarde pinnacle, howling fjord, zul'drak, and icecrown.
it would had been so much cool if we had a quest in wich the lich king himself shows up, as a friendly target, and offers us a place in the scourge.
=O we could refuse his offer and show him the finger, or better yet, accept his offer, we get phased out for a few quests, after we get rescued by someone and then after watching the true side of the scourge, and how things work inside their ranks we feel sort off more motivated to fight them.
the closest interaction we have with him is when we talk to the little boy who offers us the flashback quests.
