Not suitable for all bosses or most bosses in general

You've said it, mate. Run away from Block Rating for your boss set. Block Value is fine (but still avoid pieces with rating + value, I find it waste of itemization points). For your trash/AoE set, you still want BV more than you want BR. Simply because you should have ~15-20% passive BR from your gear (some is just unavoidable), and with HS you are already at 50%. Value is still good.
With Libram and Block set (i.e. 5 pieces so far...) I block for ~2,500 already.

Well, you've hit the ShoR soft cap, so why would you want any more?
Oh? People actually stack BV to mitigate damage? xD

2,760 is the cap for BV for ShoR.

Block is good if your farming Naxx. My block set is only around 1850 BV UB and Loatheb doesn't really hit at all, makes that a really easy fight. Same with Patch. He hits 2kish, maybe 3k at most. Can almost do it without a healer if SoL and JoL proc enough.

It's not mandatory to have the 102.4% combined avoidance. It helps though, with both damage mitigation and mana regen.

Isn't there a soft-cap at 2400 or so, with diminishing returns for BV above that up to 2760 damage? At least, that was what was reported on the PTR. (Mod quotes don't turn green... hum...)
Well it's *almost* effective health when you consider most paladins (dare I say all?) who are stacking BV will be well over 102.4% raid buffed. If you have 3k block value, that's 3k more damage it takes for a hit to kill you.
Sorry, the sarcasm didn't come through well enough. I'm still just bitter that Prot PvP burst was nerfed as a result of the ShoR BV cap.

Block value diminishing returns start at 2400 and cap at 2760 (for level 80). There are no DR on block value before 2400, that could be what you're thinking of.
Yep, and that was my original point. Once you've hit 2500 BV, then you're going to get diminishing returns on BV, so you're better off stacking Strength, for the purposes of increasing your damage output. Having additional block value doesn't serve much extra purpose from a damage perspective, since you'll go over the cap fairly soon.
So you want 15% passive and holy shield gives 50. I use the old 70 libram so I guess that changes a bit for me. I thought reaching 102.4% wasn't needed in WOTLK anymore for pallys. Why is this still applicable? Whats the macro to see that anyway?
Just to clarify - you mean Holy Shield gives 30%, right?
Can I get that macro
Are you referring to the one checking what your total avoidance is? Look up Quest's tl;dr Prot thread. He probably included it in there somewhere.

Once you hit 102.4 avoidance (use the macro), block valve becomes effective health since you will block, dodge, parry, or get missed on all attacks.
That said, I wouldn't use too many block rating items.

You know, even before you hit 102.4% avoidance, as long as you've got a shield, block value is still effective health, right?
