I think the main reason why people still talk about Shockadins is because we want something different from the "ret tree = DPS, prot tree = tank, holy tree = heals" convention, which I also had to personally accept is really the case with Pallys.
PVP-wise, the Shockadin spec is an old spec and lost its viability with changes to our talant trees and changes in the game at large (people didn't always have 18-20k+ HP or 900 resil, for instance :P ). They can't burn people down like they used to.
PvE-wise, for holy pallys, a Shockadin-esque soloing spec such as
this or
this works great, but that ends the moment you walk into a raid. Raids need people to fill roles and the Shockadin spec is a hybrid providing so-so DPS and so-so heals.
IMO, if you're looking for something different--something "shocky" as far as DPS goes--try a
Protribution spec. 7k+ (glyphed)Avenger's Shield crits w/ 10 second daze, 3 second silence, 30 yd range, and 30 sec cd will be sure to 'shock' your opponents in BGs and Arenas, not to mention 20sec cd stuns and lots of survivability. It also works fine while soloing and I hear it works ok in raids, provided you're geared/skilled.
