Oh blah, Mr. Profession Elitists. There is absolutely no problem with keeping herbalism as a way to provide the mats to keep Alchemy going. With the current price of herbs on most servers (frost lotus and the such), sustaining a profession like Alchemy (which does requires a constant stream of herbs as you use elixirs) is near impossible without a limitless pocketbook. Herbalism is perfectly fine, and you get the awesome soloing/pvp/raid survivability spell Lifeblood. Generally awesome.
And seriously, do you know the actual gain you would get by picking up JC or the like? I mean, 50sp is seriously such a small change that it is hardly noticeable (50sp on a player with a standing 2451sp is about a 2.03% change). Plus, the price of leveling JC without mining to provide the mats in insanely high; most of the vanilla wow gems go for about 4g a pop on my server.
That being said, if you were going to drop Herbalism (don't IMO), grab Tailoring. Its without-a-doubt the easiest/cheapest to level; you can farm the mats very easily, or just buy them (stacks of runecloth go for 1g a piece on my server, silk cloth MUCH less). The cloak enchants are very epic and cheap, and you get access to bags! Super-cool!
Also, since I have already started the trend of 'cost vs return', putting epic gems into all of your items, regardless of quality, is something that I have always been against. Do you know the statistical difference between an epic gem and a rare gem? I believe rares are +19sp, which is a difference of 3SP. THREE! At a standing 2451sp, that's a .12% increase in healing output! For, most of the time, upwards of 400% more. Sure, if you have an unlimited pocket book, or if the item is of a very high quality, then go for it; but don't throw epics in every single iLevel 200 or 219 item you get. Not worth it.
Then again, I have a feeling I am dealing with people who irrationally believe that they have to be better then everyone else, regardless of cost...

With the amount of conquest emblems u get, epic gems are cheaper to get than rare gems. It's not that he needs to heroics for gear, also my stack of triumph badges keeps growing (only on me mage that is).
So why not getting cheap epic gems instead of buying gems the rare gems of the AH (still 80g for +19 sp on my realm) ? He doesnt need gear from conquest badges if u look at his armory. So who's throwing gold away ?
Doing the WG quests and buy gems with honor is also a very cheap way to get gems unless u need the honor for pvp.
