Am I a jerk?

Well, I just got out of a SM GY run on my alt tank, and something happened to me that never happened to me, it was something I didn't think about. Do you think I was right in the following situation?
In the group there was the Tank (Me), Healer and Warrior (Real life friends they were sitting next to each other), a Hunter and a Druid.
When we downed the last boss, a chest with 12 stamina dropped. The warrior needed it, (He was tank but he dpsed since I was tank) so I was ok with it. Then the priest needed it.
I rolled a 57.
Priest rolled 94.
Warrior rolled a 23.
Naturally, I thought it was a natural case of ninjaing. So I kindly asked the priest, "Hey, may I have the chestpiece please? The warrior and I want to roll on it" since it is good to get on the ninja's bad side AFTER you get the loot.
To my surprise, the priest said that she didn't have it, and that the warrior did. She said she needed it so that she could give it to the warrior. Naturally, I was ticked, since she basically gave the warrior a chance to roll twice.
I asked the warrior to give it back to me, and after a lot of patience and asking, (and a lot of abuse from the priest's filthy mouth) I got the chestpiece.
So, was I right in demanding the chest back? Or should I have left it to the warrior?

It's a piece of digital nothingness that you'll forget about in a couple days. Do whatever the heck you want.

I don't understand what was so unreasonable or jerkassery about what you said or did. Unless by "patience and asking" you really meant "cursing and threatening." The priest and warrior could have simply hearthed out and shoved you on ignore, but instead they listened to you and eventually saw your point of view, however grudgingly.
So no, I don't see anything wrong.
Edit: And Hyperspacerebel has a completely valid point. The end result is that you now have a chest and one or two people in the universe that don't like you. It's not really that big of a concern.

Well, after I got the loot back, my tongue was admittedly let loose.
It's just that when dealing with things like this, you be polite until you get your way then do what you really want to do. If you start swearing immediately there will be no chance you get you items back.

Blacklist the players and move on. The item isn't worth stressing out about, but now you know two players (or at least the priest) who are willing to ninja a leveling item. What will they do come 80 when gear actually matters? Good to know to avoid them in the future.

It's quite obvious that the warrior guy leaned over to his buddy and said "Hey, Need on that too and trade it to me if you win." It happens all the time. Whenever I'm in a semi-pug VoA with my guild, the PvPers always ask me to roll on PvP gear and trade it to them if I win (as I am a known non-PvPer).
So you know what they are doing. They know exactly what they are doing (trying to cheat you out of loot). So the last question remains whether you can talk them out of the loot before they get so ticked off that they just leave the group.
It sounds like you talked them out of the loot. Good work.

I personally think it depends on what loot rules were agreed-upon before the run. This topic comes up frequently, in one form or another, and the consensus seems to be that you should never assume that actually needing a piece that you can use is valid unless everyone in the group agrees that is true.
In other words, did you specifically say before starting the run that you and the Warrior would be the only ones to roll on tank gear, or mail/plate gear, since you were the only ones who could use it (at that level)?
If not, then you opened yourself up to the situation you're describing, but that doesn't make you a jerk - just incautious.
Getting the drop and then jumping down their throats about it afterward?
That
makes you a jerk.
