I agree on this. Compare this with a support/community site for Ford cars and parts, which suddently started to advertise for Toyotas and such.

I'll be honest with you; posting adds like AION isn't a bad thing, especially on a site for WoW. Think about it this way; it's a win win situation that they put themselves into.
1) We know WoW will not lose playerbase, get broke or whine about it.
2) We get to see what else the monopolized MMO world has to offer.
3) By seeing what else is available, we can reaffirm our choice in our MMO (aka WoW) or try something new, to which we'll probably get bored of pretty quick and go back to WoW.
4) Competition keeps companies on edge and makes them stay sharp.
5) AION looks pretty cool to be honest, and I didn't know about it before that add. Good job WoWHead, you wrought unabated propaganda unto me, thus fulfilled it's purpose. I like it.

I like the ads on the frontpage -- probably because of being tired of black wowhead front page, and the white Aion image is good IMO. (I can see the ad though I'm not from USA)

A mmo database site with no affiliation to any single mmo company advertising....mmo's on their site?
I am shocked and appareled! What kind of pathetic company would do that, that would be like Blizzard putting WOTLK ads on the warhammer alliance forums! Imagine that HAHAHAHHAHA
Oh wait that happened.

Makes a lot more sense to me than posting ads, for example, for Cataclysm on the site when that comes out... given that that's something we're all going to buy
anyway
, whereas Aion is something some of us might be interested in, if we were paying attention to it. (I'm not, personally, but hey, whatever.)

Wowhead, lol. I wonder how much they got paid for that add, nice of them to stay loyal. I understand they probably got a lot of money. But geez, anyone and everyone has a price these days.
I hope Wowhead gets enough of these ads to run one all the time so they make plenty of money, live rich lives and put some of it back in to the site.
Seriously, there is no suck thing as a free lunch. And if I was going to advertise a new MMO, where would I do that: on a coffee bean site? Unofficial sites like Wowhead, especially with the traffic they have, would be my first choice. If you don't like it, and I suspect you don't, well, too bad.

They aren't suppost to advertise others MMO games even they are good,if Blizzard saw this,if they could they would 100% shut the site down for doing this.
You think that Blizz doesn't know about this already?
I am 100% sure "green" Wowhead users such Adashiel,Skyfire and ArgentSun will post on this with ridicilous reasons why they did it,but it will not make sense.
They just dug their own hole.
They did it to pay for the site so that users could use it for free.I guess it's a "two birds in one rock" thing as it's a twisted way to make us subscribe to the premium upgrade ("hey, guess what, you can get rid of adds with your credit card! Oh, by the way... MASSIVE ADD FLOOD INC!").)
Wowhead has been doing these front page ads long before Premium came out. It's nothing new.

This is a repost from another topic someone made about this in another thread. The thread was locked for being a duplicate but I wanted to take the discussion over here.
I hate you guys... for ruining what you had here.
The adverts are getting worse and worse on this website. You literally cover your front page with adverts for other MMOs (which is a total insult to Blizzard, the company who's back you're making money off of and to the community that visit this site), have annoying (understatement) popups for PartyPoker.com, flash banners everywhere and now a side column for yet another flash banner advert. When will it end? Where are you guys going to draw the line?
You guys are such sellouts. I'm off to
www.wowdb.com
I feel like I need to correct a specific misunderstanding here.
Let me show you something:
Onyxia on Wowhead
Onyxia on Wowdb
The reason why Wowdb had fewer ads than Wowhead is because they have
fewer people working on it
. On Monday and Tuesday, we had a team of seven full-time people—five programmers and 2 content writers—working round the clock to make sure we had the data you guys needed as quickly as possible, and that's just the people that are on staff. It doesn't include our incredibly dedicated volunteers, like
Corgan
and
ArgentSun
. Even if we paid everyone on staff minimum wage for their work, it would cost thousands of dollars a week to operate this site—and we don't pay minimum wage, because that sucks and the guys who work here are worth more than that. And that doesn't even begin to include the costs of servers, bandwidth, etc—and we'd like to have some money left over to buy Wowhead T-shirts for our volunteers, and to buy prizes so we can have
contests
on the site.
The economy is in the toilet right now, so ads are worth less than they have ever been since the dot com crash. To compensate, we're trying to offer ad packages that include things that are more interesting than banner ads, like front page skins—because advertisers aren't really interested in just buying banner ads anymore. After all, in most cases you guys are too smart to click them. :P
We've introduced a
Premium
subscription to allow people to get rid of the ads. Not a lot of people have signed up, because we don't actually offer any Premium-only
features
—the things we offer are a few extra perks (like custom avatars), removal of the ads, and the right to tell people "I'm helping Wowhead become a better website". We COULD offer more—we could make existing features require a Premium subscription to use—but that would be an $%^&*!@ thing to do, and I don't want Wowhead to go down that road. Instead, we leave it as is, knowing that only the truly dedicated will be interested, and we have to run different kinds of ads to pay the bills instead.
So, switch to Wowdb if you want—or to Thottbot, or to Allakhazam, or to Wowdigger, or whatever you like. We'll honestly be sorry to see you go. I just don't like to see people leave with the perception that we run the site the way we do because we don't care about the game, or the people who play it. Hell—we've even
spoken specifically with Blizzard's community team
to make sure that running these ads is acceptable, and they understood completely. What about you guys?

The smart people know that you put alot of works and it cost alot of money to run this website. Only retards would say otherwise.

As I mentioned in the post above, we asked Blizzard in advance if it was okay to run front-page ads for other MMOs. Blizzard was very understanding about the financial concerns and assured us that it was okay with them that we run the ads. Note that we are still in the
Official Fansite Program
.
My bad, I use Wowhead since something like 1 year and this add is only the second one I see in frontpage (first was this one for a contest on another MMO I think a few days ago). To my defense I mostly use the french version of the site and switch to the english one only to see comments by directly replacing the fr. by www. in the url, and the french frontpage don't have adds :]
Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. It's not actually based on the subdomain, it's based on your IP—some skins display to all users, some display only to users in the US. If it's for an MMO that isn't running in Europe, it'd be silly to put a skin up on the homepage for users in France. :)
Actually I was naive to think Wowhead is still own by its creators :p I read a thread about this on a french forum a few days ago (this add is making quite a buzz it seems!) and found out that the site was bought by Affinity Media two years ago, so I guess the Wowhead staff don't get to say a thing about the adds choice and can't be blame for it :)
Wowhead is owned by the
ZAM Network
, which you hear us mention from time to time on the
blog
. Affinity Media owned ZAM at one point—I'm honestly not sure if it still works that way. That kind of thing is for CEOs to worry about, not me.
Regardless, here is the difference between Wowhead
before
joining ZAM and Wowhead after.
Before
Dev team: Skosiris and Mystadio
Content/Advertising team: Evilseed
After
Dev team: Skosiris, Mystadio, Poeticdragon, TheOnyx, Alayton
Content Team: Malgayne, Miyari
Advertising Team: A group of people in LA who probably aren't necessarily comfortable with me spamming their names in random forums on the internet
If you look at the new features we've introduced since we joined ZAM—like forums, a
blog
, a 3D viewer, a
profiler
,
item comparisons
, a
pet calculator
, regular patch notes, stat weights, etc. etc.—I feel like we've come out ahead on the deal. :)

Be fair, these are legitimate concerns. :)

Based on the amount of features, data, and helpful comments (and forum posts, for the most part...) this site has I think the small amount of advertisements that ARE displayed are beyond acceptable.
Edit: Not to mention up until very recently there wasn't even an option for a premium membership to this site.
