More time spent clipping is less time spent filling.

FFS - my following post is NOT correct. I cannot goddam believe I've had this wrong for the last 3 odd months.
Hes actually pretty much correct gorefiend - its just its a bit of a taboo subject due to the way dots will fail if you have procs up when you recast. Its basically easier on "noob" raiders to simply know that clipping is bad. Its less important now that immo (the only binary dot) is out of the aff rotation.

False ^^^^
The ONLY DoT you DO NOT want to clip is CoA.
Reason: The last tick does the most damage.
Reason to clip UA and Haunt:
The effects are "refreshed" on the target - meaning the same tick schedule when dealing damage with UA will not skip a beat:
+ = Damage - = down time between ticks.
Clipping:
--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--+--(UA refreshed)+--+--+--+
No missed tick time.
No clipping:
--+--+--+--+--+--+(UA recast includes cast time and wait for the 1st tick)----+--+--+--+--+--+--+
Missed tick time due to recast and waiting for first tick (it's not instant)
Haunt - you'll be increasing your damage by 23% (20% with no glyph) full-time.
Read the changes.... forgot how many patches ago... it no longer goes like this:
...has faded from X
...has been afflicted by X
When you clip - Now it says
... has been refreshed on X
Blizz made these changes so you can purposely clip. Let's say a tick happens every 2 seconds - the first tick takes 2 seconds AFTER it lands on your target - waiting for it to drop and then re-apply means you've lost a tick in that 3.2 seconds (cast and wait).
Clipping "refreshes" the DoT on your target and ensures that you keep ticking every 2. CoA is the only one you want to let fall completely off.
Hope that clears things up. I'd look up the patch notes - but this changed happened a loooooong time ago.
This post is full of bull^&*!. Want a prof? Go to a training dummie with recount open. Start casting UA non stop. Youll see you will have ZERO ticks. same with cor and coa. Someone had a math about how much time you lose when you clip your dots. If i recall right it was about 6 seconds loss.

yeah, i was ready to shoot this down until i saw irharry lend the idea some of his considerable credibility. if it weren't for his post i wouldn't even have tested it but i did log in and run some tests and i can confirm that:
the above post from NinjaMatic does
not
reflect the mechanics of the game
yes the combat log says "refreshed" but that does not mean that the tick timer isn't restarted. it IS. the only time this is not the case is with abilities like everlasting affliction.
to be clear, recasting corruption 1 second before a tick will reset the timer meaning 3 more seconds before the next tick occurs - a 5 second downtime.
the advice that you should clip your DoTs creates FURTHER problems with the recent mechanic that a more powerful DoT can not be overwritten. if you are in the habit of clipping (which you shouldn't be) this will lead to dropped DoTs.
(btw, my test was done with corruption. as orloxgr suggests, if you keep casting it you will never see a tick. i also let it tick and timed a recast just before the next tick. it was always 3 seconds from the cast before i saw another tick.
we could do some more accurate and methodical tests if anyone still has doubts but this was easily enough to satisfy my curiosity and confirm the mechanic as i've always understood it).

I just very deservedly lost a whole bucket of credibility for that :P
Thanks asa - It was an issue that I would never have brought up myself as it was just far too confusing to try and explain why (as I thought) refreshing dots was actually bad.
I have actually thought for the last 3 odd months now that dots were refreshed...... but that there was a tacit "don't talk about it" as it was still a bad thing due to procs causing "refresh" failure.
please ignore my post - I can't believe I've been #$%^ing wrong about this for so goddam long. I HATE being wrong

The worst thing Gorefiend is that I test almost everythng pretty extensively - I've wasted hundreds of hours on dummies and damn near as many on Sims, but I never tested this. I took it on blind faith from a lock I know in game who is obviously not correct on this one, lol.

Then I have another question how about DL and Hunt, from the posts above does this mean the if you channel DL on a mob who has Corrupiton does it mean that for the whole duration of DL corruption will not tick because DL keeps refreshing it every second it deals damage?
Same for Hunt would that mean when we apply Hunt we are loosing 3sec before the next Corruption ticks? Can someone test this?
I'm going to test it later, but based on experience the talent Everlasting Affliction works differently. This makes Haunt and DL reset the duration of Corruption, not recast it. Therefore, it's extending the life of Corruption without interrupting ticks.
However, this is something that I haven't tested specifically, but I'm 99% sure its how it works, just based on my Recount data and from what I've observed offhand.
