I don't know what the simcraft would be on the difference between the two pet's personal DPS, but it's more about the talents you are sacrificing to make your spec. Most importantly
Death's Embrace
and
Ruin
.
So even if the imp does slightly better DPS than the puppy, you're DPS will drop like a rock to make it work.

From what I read, the felhunter is better than the doom guard for affliction.

yes interesting isn't it. on the ptr simcraft was showing the DG behind the FH by a few dps. 70 dps in favour of DG isn't enough to make it a viable pet given the cooldown, reagent, lack of buff and annoyance of summoning.
