So the issue is the launcher is unable to download the patches?
Try using a mirror site that hosts the patches wholesale. When I have to reinstall from scratch, I use Filefront, as it does not cap download speeds.
Note that if you are downloading patches manually, you only need to download the latest major patch, and all minor patches after that major patch. For example, WoW is currently patched to version 3.1.1. Thus, you would install Vanilla, BC, and WotLK from your discs, download patch 3.1, then patch 3.1.1. You do not need to patch through all the versions individually before installing expansions.
As for addons, I manage them manually as well. I generally shy away from sites like Curse and its program, unless the mod I want is only available from there, since it has been targeted by malware in the past. Of course, most sites (not just Curse) are vulnerable simply via the advertising they run, which is also why I run Firefox with Adblock and Noscript.
Addons specifically can only interfere with the game's interface itself, as they are text files that run through WoW and thus cannot create problems or vulnerabilities in your system. That said, it is possible for a malicious addon to attempt to call an invalid command from the server (such as an item link that does not yet exist on your server) which will cause you to disconnect immediately, but I imagine that's a rarity (and the addon would not gain popularity either).

I always had problems with the downloader. After many calls and emails I figured out it's because of my nvidia network manager. Don't know if it's your issue, but if it is you need to disable it. That fixed mine. Once you erase the add-ons (unless you're downloading some weird crap from an untrusted site), you're good to go. They don't save anywhere else and Curse is pretty trustworthy.

Don't blame the client, blame poor computing practises on your part.

I have been having problems with the Curse Client too. I got told by my first raiding guild to install addons from curse client, so I had done so.
All my addons, come 3.1, are uninstalled or when they are installed cause a problem in wow.
Would there be anything else to install addons through, seeing as I have to now reinstall them all, or do I have to install them manually which I know absolutely nothing about. >_>
I have uninstalled curse client because it seems to be causing too many problems, and have no idea where to install them from now.
Thanks for any helpful replies in advance. :)

I have been using curse client on my pc and mac since wowmatrix went down, I have not had a single problem what so ever. I think it could be problems with just the addons it's self, if you wanna bash curse go to there site.

You don't need to use the Curse client, all you have to do is manually unzip every addon you download to your WoW folder... interface --> addons.
Et voila.
But seriously, I have way more addons than you, and I don't have a problem.
Where to download them from though? o_O

It just auto-saved in a temporary file (wow-matrix that is)...any reason for that, or a way to make it available to use?
Sorry if this is getting very annoying, I think me + technology = big no-no, and I can't raid without any working add-ons :P

Curse.com? pfft
It's called Wowmatrix.com
Learn it, Live it, Love it
Wowmatrix has been blocked by both wowinterface and curse so it is dead.
and ps I use curses client because I have over 120 addons and its a real pain in the butt to update them any other way.

As far as I'm concerned WoW Matrix can stay dead in it's grave. I'm also bloody %^&*ed off at all the really idiotic posts
over here
.
Do people even know why WoW Matrix is blocked? Did no one ever read
this topic on WoW Interface
? Or was I the only one?
First off, WoW Matrix are greedy little bastards who were and are trying to take credit for AddOns they never created. They never used to give credits to the people, they removed all donation links and website links in the AddOn itself and claimed the AddOn was theres.
This is against copyright and intellectual property rights and is highly
illegal
.
Secondly, WoW Matrix liked to host a ton of links that were actually links to WoW Interface and Curse. WoW Matrix never hosted the AddOns on it's own website, it used hotlinking and grabbed the download links from either Curse or WoW Interface so as to not waste bandwidth on it's own part.
Then they slapped a crapload of their adverts all over the place and started profiteering on other sites links! And people disagree with WoW Interface and Curse for stopping this? Has anyone here
ever owned a large-scale popular website before? Ever!
1.
Websites use bandwidth.
2.
Bandwidth (aka data allowance) is used up when people view the websites pages and download the websites content.
3.
Websites like WowHead, WoW Interface and Curse (and all those search engines you use) are so big and are used by so many people that they have to run their own servers to keep up. This costs money, either by paying for your own server or paying to hire one out.
4.
The more bandwidth you use the more it's gonna cost you. When you're using more bandwidth for your site than you normally do then you get suspicious. When some other site is piggy-backying off your bandwidth then you get !@#$ed. I know this from experience as a webmaster/web designer.
If WoW Interface and Curse didn't stop WoW Matrix you wouldn't have WoW Matrix anymore. Why? Because WoW Matrix depends on WoW Interface and Curse, you'd be bloody screwed. And you
complain
about this, you're all bloody ungrateful!
I'd like to see someone here, who knows nothing about what they're doing, set up a website. Make it get millions of hits a day and see what they do when they get their server costs and can't afford them.
Bah. Who said the internet was free?
