Thrall, Warchief of the Horde, is a shaman.... nuff said...
In Warcraft 3 he is but I think the one that is sitting in Ogrimmar in WoW is actually a Warrior.

Wait until you go through the Wrathgate event and you'll see Thrall in his Shamanic Awesomeness.

I did that event a while ago but I don't remember anything that made me think he is a Shaman. But I just saw him at the very end before my king tried to kill him.
What I do remember is killing him
For the Alliance!
and I think he was a Warrior (and not using any Shaman skills). I'm not 100% sure about that I have to admit since it has been a few weeks.

There's basically no difference in leveling speed between ele/enh.
I disagree. Yes, enh and ele will both kill enemies equally fast. I re-specced from enh to ele in my mid-60s and was surprised to see that the dps is exactly the same.
But Enhance will be far superior for soloing things. Ghost Wolves are an awesome cooldown and with them you can take down almost any elite mob, solo almost any group quest easily. Add in the elemental totems a bit later and you got a soloing machine with your enhance Shaman. Elemental Shamans can't really compete with that. The wolves will also help a lot to keep you alive in huge pulls. As enhance I could easily take on 6-8 mobs of my own level while the wolves are out, no matter if melee or casters. As elemental I was nowhere near that.
So yes, in single target pulls enh and ele will both be equally good. As soon as you want to start soloing elite mobs or do huge pulls enh will pull clearly ahead.
Elemental will also have a few problems with enemy resistances. There are quite a few quest mobs (especially in Nagrand) that are immune to nature damage and there isn't really much else an elemental Shaman can do. Waiting for the fire totems to slowly finish off mobs is boring.
Still, leveling as what you like better is the most important thing to do. Leveling is supposed to be fun. If you want to play a caster then just do. You will not really lose anything in leveling speed if you just skip some quests (group quests and the ones with nature immune enemies).
You make some good points. But soloing elites and large groups of mobs will only affect your leveling speed very slightly; you can complete a few extra quests, but none are required. So I don't think it makes enough of a difference to recommend one spec or the other to a new player.

The quests that require you to kill elites often give blue rewards, as opposed to the usual greens. Blue items will result in better DPS output, therefore quicker levelling overall.
If you can't solo elites but want the benefit of using as many blue items as you can along the way, you need to organise/wait for groups to kill elites, again costing time.
Also, using kiting tactics/frostbrand weapon/frost shock (to solo elites) all mean lower DPS, and will take you longer to down an elite (even though its possible, which I'm not disputing). So again, slower than Enhancement, where you can use a normal rotation and burn elites down.

Leveling speed isn't the only important thing for me. I respecced to Ele at 60+ and only lasted for 1 level, Flame Shock and Lightning Bolt spam wasn't very enjoyable for me. Enhance had a lot more things to play with, Shocking then SS then LL then refresh WS then LHW to top up a bit of lost health (occasionally drop totems for unintended trouble).
Ele is probably more brutally efficient I guess.
