A few Tanking questions.

Hi everyone, I have a few questions that aren't answered in the Stickies.
I want to know exactly how Block Rating and Value factor in into anything.
Here are my thoughts on both of them.
Block Value can be changed to some damage shaved off of an attack and threat which comes from harder Shield Slams and harder Damage Shield procs. And, as bosses can hit HARD talking 80k raw down to maybe 30kish from armor, is 2000 off really a big deal? And using Block Value for threat doesn't seem like a good idea, at all.
Block Rating increases chance to Block, with low rating, Block Value's chance of being used is lowered.
I have me an item comparison right
here
Item set 1 is the Block RATING set.
Item set 2 is the Block VALUE set.
Item set 3 is the set I would use normally (if I had all that /sigh)
Set 1 and 2 have Blues, and Level 70 items, but, that is the HIGHEST that there was.
And, as you see using either of those sets drops you about 6000 Health, 2000 Armor, 200 Defense, about 1000 Avoidance points (Dodge+Parry as they are equal with the same diminishing returns), and a large sum of Expertise.
Of course you can mix and match using thirds of each would seem like the best results but they would all be low and kinda worthless to use.
Also, Armor vs Avoidance please discuss that too.
I have the sets back together, Set 1 is Block Rating, Set 2 is Block Value, and Set 3 is every day set.

not really

it's ok, but expertise and hit are more effective

true, if you are calculating your chance to take back-to-back (or back-to-back-to-back) unmitigated hits.

nothing is there, but you seem to understand that block is underwhelming, so you should be ok.

one is mitigation, one is avoiance... what did you want to discuss?

Sorry that nothing was there. At the time I posted it, I had 3 sets of gear in a comparison. But recently my computer has not been saving anything Wowhead related, like even when I hit remember me, I exit come back 10 seconds later I'm logged out and the likes. I'll try and get the sets back up as soon as possible.
And about the Armor vs Avoidance thing, I was looking at items with extra armor using some of the item budget. Most items have Base Armor, Str, Stam, Defense, Dodge/Parry/Block (usually 2 of the 3, all if in small portions) something.
Where items with Extra Armor, Str, Stam, Defense, Dodge/Parry/Block (usually 1 in a medium sized portion)
And are trinkets with armor worth taking as it's usually them over a stam trinket.
Also, yes I am fairly underwhelmed with Block everything and slightly with extra armor, but not as much as block.

For itemization, all epic items will have their Base Armor, Strength, and Stamina. Then they have any of the three from the following list:
Extra Armor
Defense
Dodge
Parry
Block Rating
Block Value
Hit
Expertise
Extra armor on an item is very good, you can think of it as having extra Stamina. Defense/Dodge/Parry are all more or less equally good. Hit/Expertise/Block Value are your "threat" stats, and all three of these have an added little "side" benefit (hit affecting spells, expertise being worth double until 26 and then reducing boss parry haste beyond softcap, and BV doubling as a mitigation bonus also]. Block rating is okay for heroics and for particular purposes (whelps, Anub, that sort of thing), but is otherwise a pretty junk stat for us at the moment.
So to sum that up, any item with extra Armor is very good and should be used. Pick up items with Hit and Expertise until you are at a comfortable level (not necessary to be totally capped), and then gravitate to only Def+Dodge+Parry itemization beyond that. Block Rating should be avoided, and Block Value is okay to take but only when it's not coupled with Block Rating (T9 Legs for example).

Porcell thanks for clarifying the possible stats on gear. As noobish as those questions sounded I am actually an experienced Tank, but I've always disliked the idea of having Block Rating/Value instead of another Avoidance/Threat stat.
And I see how extra armor can count as more stamina as I did do some math about how much y armor decreased x hit by, and in most cases stam won overall. And being an avoidance man I'd rather have 30 Parry Rating (and I'm far from the cap because without vent on this server you get nowhere) than 600ish Extra armor.
But, using what you have given I will be likely to use extra armor, I still stand firm on Block Rating/Value.

armor is always there, and the same can't be said about parry.
two examples to highlight that point are after a headbutt by icehowl or a frosty blast from anub. in both cases, you are stunned and are guaranteed NOT to dodge, block, or parry the next couple of attacks.
your armor and health pool are the only things standing between you and the floor.
