well ok, lets look at this.
firestone = 49 crit = 1.06% crit
also 1% to direct damage
this basically equates to +2% direct damage
spellstone = 60 haste = 1.82% haste
also 1% to DoT damage.
the haste can also be seen to, ostensibly, improve direct damage only
using a quick recount parse of a test dummy fight using deep a destro build i have 81.7% of my damage as direct damage, the remaining 18.3% DoT.
the firestone's overall contribution would be ~1.634%
the spellstone's overall contribution would be ~1.673%
this test has far too small a sample size to be taken
too
seriously but my conclusion is that they're very much within the margin of error and are basically the same for a deep destro build.
it's also very much worth pointing out that deep destro uses the least DoTs of any build (only immolate and CoD). all other builds will clearly gain more from using a spellstone.

indeed. sorry, i should have answered the question more directly. yes haste is much better than crit, and for all builds except deep destro this is all you need to take into consideration when choosing a stone. for deep destro the direct damage increase is enough to claw it back into contention but they're both basically even.
for simplicitiy's sake it may still be best to say that spellstones are best for all builds.

I'd say it depends on what group you are in.
If you're in a group with a warlock that provides ISB or a mage that provides Imp. Scorch, along side a Boomkin and an Ele Shaman, you get
a lot
of free critical strike rating, which makes the haste from the spell stone weigh more than the crit from the fire stone.
If you're in a 10man and nobody gives you the crit bonus, the fire stone might be a good choice.
as a side note, I always use the spell stone no matter what.

no testing needed for this one i'm quite sure.
conflag is a direct damage spell.
yes, it's damage is based on a DoT but the calculation of how much damage conflag gets from immo is a separate one to the one that takes place as conflag hits.
