Avoidance or stam?

after reading
http://elitistjerks.com/f72/t47413-imbalance_tanking_classes_aka_avoidance_hoooo/
i feel that i should stop gemming for stam and gem for dodge or parry instead.
currently i have 31k hp, 28%dodge, 18% parry unbuffed.
i was hoping to re gem everything so that i focus mainly on dodge instead of stam.
current tanking spec is standard frost.
more avoidance would not only let me mitigate more dmg but also = more rune strikes--->more threat.
any thoughts?

I'd say keep gemming for stam. You'll already be hitting significant diminishing returns on dodge and parry, whereas 24stam will always be 24stam.
For more information on diminishing returns,
look here
. You can interpolate what your final avoidance stats will be from the tables and see what kind of DR you're running into.
Another point regarding the OP at the EJ forums - Blade Barrier has been completely reworked now, so it's much harder to reach that 70% avoidance level that was described.

make 2 sets. judging from your stats you've come to the progression where you can pick up different pieces with different use.
2nd avoidance might have DR, but don't forget that the more avoidance you already have the better the avoidance gets.
1% extra avoidance when you have 0% avoidance reduces dmg with 1%
1% extra avoidance when you have 99% avoidance reduces dmg with 100%
or 0.01% extra avoidance when you have 99% avoidance reduces dmg with 1% (the whole idea behind the DR)
so avoidance stays good , just not rediculously overpowered like it was at the end of tbc. So stacking avoidance still has his uses, just like stacking EH has, they have different uses and their is no reason why not to have both and take whatever the situation asks for.
lastly the article you refer to is outdated.

This
Stamina never diminishes over time and is health is always good
health is no good when healers can't heal through the dmg bc you take to much dmg bc you avoid nothing. else we'd all be in the frost res pieces.

i have 31k hp unbuffed. because alot of the ulduar fights strain the healers, the MT does not get as much heals as usual. Avoidance would let me decrease the atks taken, giving the healers more room to breath. take ignis or kologarn or vezax for example, their buffs/debuffs makes them hit the MT harder. but with mroe avoidance, we would take less dmg, giving healers an easier time to keep us up. Ofc we need a healthy hp to stay alive, but imo we shouldnt stack so much stam.

Granted, but the at your gear level, the gains you recieve from a 16dodge or 8dodge/12/stam gem are minimal at best.
I'll agree with others about one thing in particular - never should your unbuffed stamina be below 30K if you're looking at 25 man content.

Slightly off topic, but what about geming for expertise or hit?
Before nax I was at 5-6^%exp and around 6-7% hit. Now that Im starting to pick up nax gear, I noticing Im losing alot of exp and hit for avoidance and stam. So should I socket for it or just wait it out and hope some gear drops to get my exp/hit back up?

*edit - Whats wrong with armory, last few ppl Ive looked up there health has been wrong? mine shows 26k but really Im at 30?

Most likely due to the fact that armory doesn't take things like active talents (e.g. Anticipation) and auras (in our case Frost presence) into account.
I'd say that undless you feel the
need
to socket for tps (for better trash aggro/intense boss fights) you shouldn't. Hit and expertise normally comes naturally from the gear you pick up (there's alot of it the further you progress more or less).
But should you feel the need to socket for tps, Expertise is the way to go (undless you're running a spell heavy rotation with frost/HB, then hit rating should yield the higher tps gain).

If you're starting to get into Ulduar, you should be Def capped without gems or Glyph of the Stoneskin Gargoyle - right? Then I highly recommend you start using Glyph of Swordshattering for the extra avoidance it offers. You could also, optionally, go with Rune of Spellshattering for more magical damage absorption depending on how you have yourself set up. I personally go with Swordshattering. This puts my Parry rating (with raid buffs) at 22%. I then have 24-25% dodge (somewhere around there), and if I pop my trinket I can get 32 - 34% dodge which is a nice chunk of avoidance and always keeps my healers happy.
i am not def capped w/o stoneskin cuz i have some new ulduar gear that gives little defense rating, plus i use HB glyph so i dont even use icy touch for the def from badge sigil.
currently im exactly def capped, so dunno. i plan to get rid of my rune of repulsion that adds +95 parry, switching it up for furnace stone or the thad trink u mentioned. ima stay with gargoyle rune as it also adds HP

meh. im using grim toll atm to help me toward hit cap. have bout 28% dodge and 19.6% parry with rune of repulsion. btw ive seen alot of very very geared tanks using defender's code instead of some other trink, is it because the CD is like an extra emergency life saver?
lol i have it sitting in my bag
