Are warriors behind on threat?
My guild has 3 tanks: two paladins and one warrior.
The warrior has the best gear in the guild while the paladins are just average... but his threat is WAAAY behind the paladin.
He even uses his dual spec with two prot builds so that he can tank AoE or Single target better. Still, his threat fails.
Heck, wasn't it for FD and MD, I'd usually be ahead of him.
So, is it the class or the player?

I will be the first to admit it. As a warrior tank i have a little bit of a problem in pulling agro on big groups while in a raid. I can easily aoe tank an instence, But it really is dependent on the player (how good he/she is) the gear In this case his gear was great, so he must have sucked.
Warriors are better at single target agro, but we can do bigger. It just requires a bit more patients from the rest of the group/raid.

The average warrior i've played with, or played myself, can hold threat
if
we can get the mob(s) for a few sec to build atleast some threat.
On AoE packs (such as Thorim in Ulduar) Warriors fail miserably, no warrior in my guild can do their work in that room, me not being an exception, dunno why thou.
Worked fine with me, I can tank that stuff as well as the rubble at Kologarn and the adds at Razorscale with no problem. I just usually get assigned to MT the boss, or do the gauntlet at Thorim (where our ability to charge isn't bad).
We aren't paladins but there are no fights in the game that require more AoE threat than warriors can produce.

warriors do not fail at aoe tanking, players fail at aoe tanking. i got stuck doing the thorim arena on our first kill, and i'll most likely keep doing it. (when the tunnel team dies, i like to see how long i can keep it going.)
you just have to learn where our strengths are and capitalize on them. mobs will have no trouble running right through a consecration or D&D because healing threat can be higher than the 1-2 ticks they'll pick up on the way through, but one TC is going to be more than enough to snap their attention around.
in fact, between thunderclap, shockwave, concussion blow, improved revenge, disarm, charge, intercept, intervene, vigilance, taunt, and challenging shout, you'd be hard-pressed to show me a class that has MORE abilities suited to tanking the arena.
(and no, i'm not saying it's easy - that would be false)

Once I get threat on a target, I'm good to go (in regards to staying over DPS). If I'm fighting with other tanks, it sucks. Warriors are SO dependent on being hit in order to gain rage and cause threat, that if we don't get that first few seconds of getting hit it's easy to lose a mob.
Case in point tonight was during our progression raid working on 25 man Yogg-Saron. We were only running with 2 true tanks (Me and a Paladin), but also had a DPS DK in Frost Presence and DPS Druid in bearform to help pick up stray Minions in phase 1. If everyone can wait long enough to have a Minion reach me so I can get a shield slam off, it's stuck on me. If DPS opens up before hand, or the Paladin tank Judges something, or the DK does whatever he does; I'm screwed. I'd have to taunt, at which point the tanks start yelling "don't taunt off of me." So I end up floating in the back hoping to grab a stray one (and giving up if one of the other tanks gets there first).
It's getting really frustrating for me in the 25 man because I find I'm competing with the Paladin and DK. On trash they can pick up everything so easily and I need to resort to taunting in order to get something on me so I can get rage and establish threat. On bosses I'm fine when I MT. On 10 man it's fine; I work with a different paladin (different than the 25 man tank), and it just feels like more of a team effort in 10 man. In 25 it's more like a competition and I feel like I come up on the short end of it.

i haven't gotten to yogg yet, but do you have room to charge? i find a charge/SS combo is usually enough to pull off another tank if they are being greedy (i do macro shield block with SS); maybe a concussion blow if necessary. the charge gives me enough rage for the SS, and then i have my own source of rage.

Warriors are not behind threat.
assuming all the variables are same (gear lvl, lvl of player ect ect)
Just paladins can generate initial threat faster then warriors can.
Good example is that, most paladin tanks will pop wing + AS + judge follow by righteous shield. this can be achieved within 2sec.
Paladins have mana based ability, where as warriors have rage bar.
As fight progress, warrior will have excessive rage, where they can start to use ability to keep TPS high.
Where as Paladin has simple 9696 rotation with ever flow of mana regen from healing.
Since OP's question isnt about whats better tank in XYZ situation. not even going to go there.
interms of Threat, Paladin will grab bigger chunk of initial threat from beginning and since both tanks have roughly the same TPS capability (meaning large chunk of threat comes from shield slam/ righteous shield), it may appear that warriors struggle with threat compare to paladin. This is why Warriors usually ask for MD from hunter or wants extra few second before all the DPS roll there face on keyboard :D

Charging in Yogg's room in phase 1 is pretty dangerous. There are clouds that roam around the room and if you step in one you will spawn an extra add. The adds are not stunnable, and as you probably know if you charge an unstunnable mob you will end up running through him. With how unpredictable that is (you might pop through him into a cloud), I generally try not to charge during YS phase 1.

i would say if the warriors threat isnt high at all then if i was him id put villigance on one of the other tanks although it ^&*!es them off XD cause it doesnt stack with there divine sanc, but both paladins and warriors are good in there own ways cause if somone ninja pulls or somthing the warrior tank is basicly *!@#ed 0=fail lol were a paladin can get aggro straight away.

always using thunder clap + shockwave + demoralizing shout, while spamming heroic strike every 1.7 sec (i don't even use cleave for multi tanking) and i don't have really big problems,
sometimes a mob gets away
but, since taunt is a great cheat, that 's really not a big deal to handle with
Sounds like you do have aggro problems. Use cleave and you won't.
