We were running Reg Gundrak and a dk, lvl 75 and wearing quest gear
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Spirestone&cn=Chillhomes&gn=Axis+of+Evil
is able to take aggro away from me?
I throw AS and lay down conc...tanking away from the group... SoR, JoW, HoR, Conc... my righteous fury is on, and this lvl 75 dk is able to take aggro away... HOW?
Now i have no idea about dk's, admittedly. Perhaps its time to learn. What is he doing that he can take agrro away from me?
I do not have any trouble tanking regular instances these days, here is my armory
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Spirestone&n=Thormax
Is he taunting (do dk's even have a taunt?) or death gripping maybe? idk, i didnt see anything in the combat log so Im clueless... he claimed he wasnt using death grip.
any ideas?
first off.. DK's have two taunts..
death grip
, and
dark command
Second off... if that DK was pulling aggro from you, then he was more than likely in
frost presence
which means that DK needs to be kicked in the head repeatedly.
Thirdly, (which is a huge probability considering he has it glyphed), he was probably using
death and decay
. Which is basically the DK's answer to consecration.
On top of D&D, he was probably putting diseases on one mob and then using pestilence to spread it to every mob in the group.. so he had D&D ticking on all the mobs, as well as his diseases ticking on them.. that's 3 ticks per second to your one tick per second with consecration. He's also blood specced, which means his rotation relies heavily on
heart strike
which is a cleave that hits two people.. and more than likely, if he was pulling aggro, he would be getting
rune strike
procs...
in other words.. the DK was being stupid. Most likely he was in frost presence, but on top of that, all those high threat, high damage, multi target abilities mean he wasn't even giving you a chance.

None of the above (with appropriate presence) should be enough to pull aggro of a paladin tank.
Especially when he's opening with AS and Cons.
My guess is he was in Frost Pres.
If he was using Death Grip you would've most likely noticed since it's a very graphical spell.
Looks pretty much like the mob implodes in a purple cloud of
happiness
misery.

agreed.
I know he was using death and decay, and im pretty sure he was using death grip. When i asked him he said no but i never have to use taunt in a regular instance and it was on constant CD this time.
then he had to have been in frost presence.. all of the high threat generating abilities I linked are only modest threat gen. when not in frost presence.
he may or may not have been death gripping... if he was you'd see a giant purple tentacle pulling them directly to him, and you'd see the taunted debuff on their window for a couple seconds. same thing with dark command, minus the tentacle bit. but chances are, he was in frost presence and too much of a scrub to not realize it and change it for the sake of the sanity of the party (especially the healer)

He had to have been in frost presence. A lot of DKs like to keep it up and steal aggro as a means of "being tough." Think about it, how uber must your DPS be to pull aggro off of the tank? Alright, not that uber but they do it anyway.
With 3.1, DKs' presence abilities are a buff. Target them and make sure they don't have a tiny blue skull under their name. If they do, call them a tard and if it's a srs group, kick them out.

Something that's great about being a paladin tank in this situation is that we can taunt more often than any other class, since we have two separate taunts that are only 8 seconds each.
Death Knights' are 8 and 35.
Druids' are 8 and 180 seconds.
Warriors' are 8, 60, and 180 seconds.

Just to be specific, Death Grip is not a
taunt
, it's a fixate effect, like
Mocking Blow
or
Challenging Roar
. Taunt, Dark Command and Growl have two effects. #1 Taunt, #2 Apply Aura: Taunt whereas Mocking Blow or the others have only one effect -- Apply Aura: Taunt.

well for the purposes of the discussion i was considering death grip a taunt since it forces the target to attack you, but i see your point.

Agree with the comments that he was in frost presence.
I've partied with a DK in VH where we lost two DPS (one because the door closed before he got in, and the other d/c) and he asked if I wanted him to switch to frost presence so he took less damage.
At a guess, this was probably the (unspoken) intention of the DK in your group. If you do see a DK in frost presence as DPS, ask the question politely and cheerfully say that you'd rather he didn't, because he'd take less damage by not accidentally taking threat than he would otherwise.

Or do what you do best as a tank.
Taunt him, smash your shield in his face and make sure he's so *!@#ed of at you he wont care when your friends beat the #$%^ out of him.

lol.... actually, tonight, I just let the DK tank (though I did ask him first), and switched specs in between VH waves. I think I'm mellowing with lack of sleep.
