Ret is typically considered the leveling spec. There are several helpful posts in the stickies section. There is alot of information in there but ver useful. Some general tips, use a 2h weapon, i've met several rets that want to use a 1h and shield....having lvled ret 1-70 2h is the way to go. However its easier to find a group as prot (thats why i switched at 70). A few other things i would recommend would be go mining and BS (lvl these as you lvl its MUCH easier), Save your gold, the gear you get from quests and bs will be just fine, off the top of my head i can think of about 7,700 gold you will need just for mounts and duel-speccing between lvl 40 and 80...so save your gold lol. I sold all my thorium ore and spent the gold like it was going out of style.....don't do that keep the thorium. Sorry to kindof go off topic a bit :-P hope some of this helps.

I believe the general consensus is that leveling ret is probably quicker, though not by much. I am leveling prot (currently 67) and love it. Once you hit 30 and get BoSanc any mass killing quests, which there are a lot, are cake and fun. The only trouble is when there's a bunch of casters, that gets real boring as a tank having to single them out. Otherwise, I ride around, trying to pick up 10-15+ mobs, destroy them, and am at full health and mana.

Aye, I leveled up completely as prot. I'm sure ret would have been faster... But it was so nice to whip through any "Kill x of these mobs" quests. Also, any group quests will suddenly become so much more manageable while you level up solo.
As an added bonus, its a fair bit easier imo to get an instance group together when you are already the tank :) ... And if you're on a PvP server, you can enjoy attacking melee classes and watching them panic when they cant hit you!

the answer is.....
quite simply its down to personal preference.
both methods are equally as fast if done right.
i myself find it faster to AOE grind than quest.
some people find it boring but i like it more than questing.
why not try out both methods and see which of the two you you like best?
this is my first post guys so dont correct my grammar please as im not too bothered as long as you can read it :)

Another thought would be the gold (assuming you don't have a main). If you go prot and just AoE grind rather than quest then you're going to have to either do more dungeons to get better gear, or you're going to have to buy off the AH, and like I said..if its your first toon you should save all the gold you get. I guess one could argue that AoE grinding has the potential for more green drops, so you could get better gear that way (in my experience the greens that drop are lower lvl then my character) but you could sell them on the AH.
The call is yours. Just lvl as holy :-P

what i like to do for gear problems is to do the first few quests solo in a zone just to update any gear lacking behind if possible, then go and aoe my way up until the next zone and do the same.
but i have recently purchased dual spec prot/ret so i can use ret to do those gearing up quests faster then switch back to prot for leveling ;]

Gold isnt really an issue as i have two 80 and can do dailies to make about 600g or cut some gems, but, like many of you have said i should try both then decide which im better suit for, personally i like to tank, and dps(never tried healing but im also lvling a spriest), but ill stick to prot/ret duel spec :)
and again thx for the helping me out!
editted for grammer and wording
