Question about Priests

Ok so today I was running Durnholde today and I had a shadowpriest in my party. He kept asking who was heals and we keep telling him that he was heals. He was stating that he was a shadow priest and that he didnt heal, so i sent him the DPS chart and I proved to him that he was not even doing good dps. I've played with shadow priests before who are phenominal healers. My question is how hard is it to understand that the main job of a priest is heals even if your not spec'd for heals.
Also I was playing my Ret Paladin and I had to rez the preist about 5 times

Yes a priest's main known role is a healer, however, we are also capable of solid dps.
Many priests level as shadow and not in healing spec because they think it is faster (like myself).
It is possible to heal as shadow for a while, however when it gets to around the 70 plus levels, it becomes harder. I healed right through the Outlands as shadow just fine. I was asked to heal Nexus the other day. I distinctly pointed out I was shadow but they insisted, well I healed the way I have healed up until 70 and we wiped constantly. Simply because my heals aren't strong enough as I am not specced that way. We had a strong group who knew what they were doing, so it wasn't their fault either.
Yes we can heal, but when it comes to higher levels, spec does play a part in how well we can heal. Shadow can only cut it for a cetain extent.
The amount of times I have been asked to heal, I tell people I am shadow, and they say, but you can still heal right....if I received gold for the amount of times I had been asked this, I'd be rich and could buy my epic flying mount :P
It's a common misconception. So maybe this particularly priest wasn't good at dps either, or didn't know how to play the class properly, it can't be expected that he can just heal because they are a priest.
Edit: Well written Homicydalmaniak, it is so important to establish who is doing what before you start. I always check who is tank/heals/dps. Often I've been invited saying Im dps, I ask who is healing and they say you, and I say no im not :P

To heal as shadow you have to really out-gear or out-level the instance after you pass HFP dungeons.

I think that this question sounds a bit like a racist one... Poor fellas', those shadow priests.

It also depends a lot on the group. If you have 4 other people with brains in their skulls, it's easy to heal through a lot of things as Shadow if you have a tank that's specced and geared for doing his job; however, once you bring the often pugged retards into the equation that take avoidable damage and stand in fires, your job suddenly becomes a lot more stressful and Shadow priests will be the first to run out of mana of all the three builds.
Long story short: Yes, healing as Shadow is possible, but if you plan on bringing idiots and are being carried by your healer anyway, you'll probably want a Holy or Disc priest in your party.

Even heal-spec'd priests are no match for failtanks and dps who can't move out of whirlwinds; bad players are perfectly capable of creating sustained wipefests that no healer can overcome. Of course a well-geared (but more to the point, a well-skilled) heal-spec'd priest might be 15% better at dealing with lousy pugs. But in terms of the original/actual question at hand, I think Val covered it nicely.

the main job of a priest is just like any other class, it is what they choose/agree to do
you want to decide what an entires class main job is? go pay the $15 a month of every person who plays that class, til you do that, ask the priest before you start the group if he is heals, if he says no hes dps, invite a healer, and always keep in mind, just because a
class
can tnak or heal, doesnt mean the
player
can, i bet anyone whos used to pugging knows this

Pretty much self explanatory.
Imo, a Shadow Priest who doesn't want to heal shouldn't be forced to heal. Why couldn't you have popped on some intellect gear and healed it yourself? Oh wait, you don't want to. Nor did the Shadow priest. That is the same principle as to you not healing.
So, you think that all Priests are healers? GG, go back to facerolling your ret pala if that is what you think.
Not all priests heal or are trained for healing higher level dungeons, don't force it on others. Either get someone more willing to heal or look for a healer. Simple enough. Just remember he pays his £10 a month as much as you do, and should be entitled to play how he wants.
Oh, and btw, if you didn't know...Shadow is a DPS tree, just as much as your retribution if not more, you don't have to drop a "retribution form" to heal. And you say you showed him the meters. If he was dpsing while healing, he is out of shadowform and has less time to cast offensive spells....no wonder it was lower.
