Playing a mage is always fun! At level 12 you already have Frost Nova and Polymorph! All you need to kill any mob, even those pesky rare elites.
If you made a mage because you want to steamroll through everything (during levelling and end-game) then you've picked the wrong class. Get tactical. It's not going to get any easier, so you're gonna have to suck it up and learn how to use your CCs wisely, manage your mana, and control your opponents or else you're going to get very familiar with the Spirit Rezzer.
I didn't have problems with my mage at low levels (besides having to drink every 2 kills), and I was always having a blast, but I feel the best point was when I hit level 50 and got my Water Elemental. Just having that extra frost nova, and steady pet DPS adds a whole new dimension of gameplay and control tactics available to you, it just about made me $%^& my pants. No joke, Un'Goro, the tar pits in front of Marshal's Refuge? That #$%^ was MY territory.
Hmm, Ice Barrier was nice, but it wasn't omfg this rocks my socks off. Deep Freeze was pretty disappointing, 5 second stuns are nice, but eh, it's not as complex or deep as the WE.

When i rolled my mage I was completely aware of the tough grind (didnt expect the huge mana problems though). I must agree though, Frost nova and polymorph are my best friends on multi-mob pulls. Learn to use them well.

Another cool part of levelling a mage is when you hit the Tanaris area round abouts, you have Ice Barrier and Shatter, and you have the bandit slaying quests.
Isn't it great getting all 15 kill credits in one pull? The yellow numbers...SO MANY NUMBERS.
AoE as much as possible. Plan out how many spells you can cast and git'er done.

Unlike the physical classes, mages like priests and locks don't get any direct gear scaling until about 20-30ish, even then it's rare and spotty(no real greens). Casters can stack int for a larger pool to reduce downtime, but it doesn't increase their damage. We can stack stam, to increase our survivability. Stacking anything else is just a waste. Warriors, rogues, hunters, shammies, pallies etc, can stack gear early on to gain a noticeable dps increase(including weapons). There are a few craftable(jcing/tailiring) items for casters, and a few drops but they're rare.
I've leveled three mages, I always aim for spellpower gear. We're designed around being an "unlimited" mana class, which really isn't true. The entire mage mana system if flawed, and has been since the vanilla beta. Learn to use evocation everytime you empty your manapool(it's a good habit to get into for leveling). If you can get over the hump to around 40, it's all downhill from there.
Once you hit 58, get into Outland you really start stacking spellpower from quest gear. You should easily be able to hit 600-900sp by the time you hit Northrend. Once you really start going in Northrend, and hit 80, you should be in the 1200-1500 range depending.

I am currently lvling a fire mage (lvl 21) and I have a mage I lvled as frost. Frost has less downtime, Fire has harder hits. Lvl 20 starts the fun, but my most fun times were around 40 and 60.
15-19 are the worst lvls in the game in my opinion. Even worse than a mage is a feral druid: bearform sucks during these lvls. Once you get evocation and blink, mages suddenly become more fun.
If you are struggling to lvl your mage through these lvls, I would suggest either trying a new spec (I'd recommend frost because of its survivability) or try lvling in a new area. At some point if these don't work, you are going to have to just tough it out. Don't try to AoE until higher lvls. Flamestrike and Frost Nova aren't enough to warrant it.
The more int you stack, the less often you will have to drink, but early on, it doesnt make much of a difference. If you go frost and get Shatter (which is pretty much required), you will notice a huge decrease in the number of times you need to drink.

lol lvling my mage (i just dinged 70, yay!) has pretty much sucked every step of the way.
you have to be careful, you have to manage mana, you have to stop and drink a lot, though it DOES steadily get less and less as you lvl ( i honestly suggest for lvling dont gear for sp and for crit and bla bla bla-- gear for int, gear for stam, theyll both make lvling so much easier, as the int gives you the hp, and the int makes your base-mana-to-mana ratio more favorable, meaning more uptime, less downtime)
but really and truly, leveling any class blows.
i suggest be lfg every step of the way, that was how i kept getting back on the ball and leveling lol cuz id be like "bla bla bla, mage, you suck!" then id get into a group and id devestate all, and suddenly my fire was back :P
i think i saw someone say they were leveling fire earlier....
NO. lol i have like 3 guildies that've tried to lvl mages as fire and havent gotten past lvl 20.... level frostfrostfrostfrost, no stops lol i dont care how much you want to be fire-- levelling frost will sav eyo ualot of corpse drags, and a lot of headaches lol
personally dual speccing is my lifeblood-- i go out and lv lfrost, then i go fire for groups :P try that post 40 maybe :P
fire can burn things down quick, and ya you can kill most on-par mobs before they get more than a couple swings on you-- but we all know that wow isnt nice to mages. you will get links and you will get them often. frost has so much survivability, i can pull a mob, and if two more link, i can coc and keep all 3 snared, sic my ele on one, and just deepfreeze/ice lance the third to death. then me n my ele gangbang the 3rd.
fire can what? burn down one (maybe) while the other 2 kill him? lol
mob density picks up like crazy in outland and northrend too- in my first couple minutes in northrend i died like twice cuz i was trying to lv las arcane lol
